Title: suddenly very slow speed
Post by: merlin on Jul 06, 2009, 19:50:34
i,m using a 2wire router, and my normal speed is around 7mb, but first thing this morning my speed had dropped to the below stats. this was well before the thunder storms had even started

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 1312 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 350 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 314 kbps

If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.

If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

so what do i do now please ????

There's two issues here. Firstly, the profile is wrong for the sync, which is why the throughput is so painfully low. But, you also mention that you used to get 7Mb. You're currently sync'ing at 1.3Mb, so you're quite some way off of that.

Could you post your line stats from your router? Also, do you have a test socket do you know? Something's possibly wrong with the line.

It's the top bit we need, Bob.  Without the benefit of one of the 'professionals' being around, the stats look fine to me, and your low speed, I'm guessing, is as a result of some sort event which has caused your profile to drop - either a burst of noise on the line, or perhaps BT engineering works.  Hopefully, it will recover soon on it's own.  Can you do another BT Speedtest?  Someone else will be along soon with probably much better advice.  :)

Hi Bob

Your sync has returned to normal, your profile should follow very quickly, hours not days. :)

thx Rik ,its been 6 hours now and no change yet, maybe tomorrow,???

as an aside how are my stats , good, bad ,indifferent, etc , i don,t understand it , but i seem to remember people talking about getting their noise down to 9dB ,mine being 6dB is that better or worse ???

The stats are good, Bob, 6db is the ideal target figure and gives you a higher sync speed. Profile changes seem to require some arcane chanting at midnight on a heath... ;)

i did the chanting on the heath, but nothing has changed yet , (now 36 hours since slow down) although i did have my clothes still on, and no vestral virgin present, would either of these have helped. on the other hand me in the all together is not a pretty sight, it may have upset the goddess electra ??? and where could i have found a virgin nowadays ????

on a more serious note, at about 6am i pulled the power supply on the 2wire, left it off for 10 minutes, then restarted, waited for it to settle , but the result had gone from .33mb to .35mb

just for interest , who/what decides a re sync should take place , ?????

The BT software forces a re-sync when it detects a lot of errors on the line, or when the noise margin falls below zero, Bob. I'd suggest having a word with support so they can test your line.

RIK i took your advice and contacted support, they tested the line and found a problem at BT ,and idnet will be contacting BT this morning .

the lady who took the call said it would probably be fixed in minutes once she could contact BT. it could not be done right then as it was 4minutes to 5pm and thats when BT shut down .
surely a company like BT should have 24/7 coverage.

it makes little difference to me , but if i was running a business, that would be another matter !!

Hi Bob

BT work gentleman's hours, which is totally ridiculous. Glad Miriam is on your case, she'll set about BT with a vengeance. ;)
