I know Rik uses it, and he'll be back on Monday, but I think it's probably just monitoring the drives, so it can defrag as it goes.

well I deleted the log now Simon but all it showed was entries every day didnt seem to be doing anything. I dont have it set to auto defrag and just do it manually whenever

Can it be turned off in the 'services'?

was set as 'started' and 'automatic'.  so if I change it to Stop the service will it still start as needed or not

If you change it to manual then it will only start when it is needed.

Baz, have you changed the startup type in the properties? if it's still set to 'automatic' the service will start again next time you reboot your PC, you need to set it to either 'manual' then it will start when needed, or to 'disabled' in which case it will never start.  :)

strange this one. It was set as 'started' in the status so I changed it to 'stop'. Startup type was left at 'automatic'. just looked again and the status is back on as 'started' and there is an entry in the log again. no reboot was done.

it looks as if it starts every time I open Perfectdisk, is that right?

ActiveSync for phones does that too.  Quite annoying.  You can remove start up entries with CCleaner, and there's also a useful app called TweaK All 3, which I use.

Looks like it, Baz, I've just  tried disabling it and PD throws up a couple of error messages and won't run, looks like it's got to be enabled and does starts up when you open PD.  :)

so what is classed as a manual start if you change it to that in services.I thought it was just to do with the scheduling part of PD.

its reset itself to 'started' again

oh yeah see what you mean Ray just tried the same and it gave an error message.stupid

This (http://www.perfectdisk.com/support/kb/789) explains it in a bit more detail, Baz.  :)

thanks Ray.looks like it needs to be on then. I use version 8 but it seems to be similar to what it states in that piece you linked to.

It does look that way, Baz, I've not encountered your problem though, because I run it in the fully automatic mode so it just does it's thing and I don't even notice when it's running.  :)
