Are the files read only perhaps when you've copied them over to Windows?

The easiest way is to use the FEBE extension to make backups of everything to somewhere safe from the re-install and then when the new windows 7 is up and running,  install Firefox, add FEBE manually and use it to restore everything else automatically.

FEBE is a Firefox extension, get it HERE (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109)

it is absolutely straight forward for backing up, restoring and transferring all your Firefox preferences and settings
