Title: Bandwidth Detailed Usage Monitor
Post by: colirv on Jun 26, 2009, 11:59:25
I see from IDNet's usage statistics that I used nearly 0.5GB yesterday, and I'm puzzled as to how.

My wife's laptop and my PC are both running XP through a wireless Speedtouch 585. We're WAP protected, with a 20-character key, and we're both running AVG 8.5 with all the trimmings, so I'm assuming for the moment that no-one is nicking my bandwidth. So, I'm looking for a free, or cheap, programme that I can install on each machine which can log what each computer is doing, so if asked it can tell me "well you had 200MB of Windows update, 100MB from XXX music site and 200MB from YYY Suspect Movies .com". A look at AVG suggests that its logs don't give me what I want to know, although I may be wrong in this.

Has anyone any suggestions?

There is net meter which can be used to track overall usage on a machine (which includes internal network traffic) but I expect someone will be along shortly with a better idea than me!!

Does your router log bandwidth usage?

Only broadly, not by application.

it sounds like you are going to need to setup snmp  on a box thats always on. have a look at something like http://www.paessler.com/prtg/

I will, thanks - although it may well stretch my limited knowledge to the full!
