Alan,
Rik is on hols at the moment, no doubt someone will be along soon and offer some help :thumb:
Hi Alan,
We cannot check your line here, only IDNet themselves can do that.
If you do a BT Speedtest (http://test.speedtester.bt.com:50301/), and post the results, along with your router stats, we may be able to offer some further advice. :)
Yep, router stats and BT speed test results please. :)
Hi Simon,
unable to do a speed test via BT,can't get it to let me in >:(
Anyway stats attached, hope this what you want.

I've had a word with support and had your line tested. Esentially, the low speed is because yesterday (at 15:24) you had a low sync event, causing your profile to drop to 135Kbps. The line itself appears fine.
Your sync recovered to its normal range and your profile should recover within the next 48 hours. If you continue getting problems, let us know and we can try things like the test socket.
Thanks
Many thanks Lance,I will give it a few days then, see how things go.
can you direct me to a reliable acceptable speed test site, bearing in mind that I have no luck with BT.
Alan
I always find the Namesco (http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk) one quite accurate.
Many thanks Sebby. :D
Alan
Hi again,
after my last post on this forum my speed went back to over 3mb,but today it is down again(see attach),any ideas?

To me that looks like the profile has dropped again. Do you know if your router logs when it drops sync?
Hi Lance,
not sure what you mean, not really up on the techy side of things
Alan
In that case, Alan, I think the best thing to do will be speak to support who should be able to confirm what your profile is (I expect 135 again) as well as when you last dropped sync (connect to the BT exchange).
They will also be able to suggest tests which could be done to get rid of the problem and try to stop it reoccuring.
Let us know how you get on!
ok Lance, but before I do that I am going to replace my rather elderly cable from my router to my phone socket. It is 10mtrs long and is not of the top quality.I think it better to do this first to eliminate any probs there.
If I still have probs,I will get back to you or support.
Alan
Ideally, you want a good-quality, short cable (preferably about 1m).
Problem is Sebby,is that my comp is in the bedroom and my phone socket is in the lounge at least 10 meters away.I have two comps into the netgear router via short ethernet cables(networked) and the router into the phone socket via 10 mtrs elderly cable.I have ordered 10m of high quality adsl cable which I will fit next week sometime.
I still cannot understand though why it should suddenly start this low speed prob.and the suddenly appear again at 3+mb.I have had this system for 3-4 years now with good results apart from the odd glitch.
Very strange ??? Alan
Hi again,
attached are my stats, which look reasonable to me,so why am I not getting this d/l speed showing at namesco.com? my browsing speeds confirm the Namesco figures,......very slow.I am very puzzled.

What did support say?

You should do it the other way round, i.e. a short telephone cable and a long network cable.

It could be anything; degradation of the line, a new source of noise, and so on. I think we first need to eliminate the long telephone cable as the cause.
Yep. The router will give the signal (well it's a totally new one in a way) a great boost to reach your room. The signal from the phone line is likely to pick up interference from all sorts of things on it's way to your room and the router. Use the master socket if at all possible.
The reason your stats don't reflect your actual throughput ( and i can't see the attachment from my phone ) is because BT use a profiling system. Basically there are a number of steps of speed and depending on your sync as reported by the router, you gain a profile. Added complication is that a change of profile is normally pretty immediate if going down but can take up to five days to go back up.
