Title: Primary/Secondary DNS settings
Post by: MikeSh on Jun 19, 2009, 08:23:32
When I first joined IDNet some years ago I was given :-

Primary DNS Server: 212.69.36.3
Secondary DNS Server: 212.69.40.3

I noticed that the email from IDNet on completion of upgrade to ADSL2+ said :-

Primary DNS Server: 212.69.40.3
Secondary DNS Server: 212.69.36.3

I have ignored this reversal but can someone please confirm the original is the correct setting?
Does it really matter anyway?

On the letter I received in Dec 2005, it lists the DNS as

Primary DNS Server: 212.69.36.3
Secondary DNS Server: 212.69.40.3

I'm not sure, but I don't think it would make too much difference. There may be a reason why the servers roles have been reversed, possibly to reduce the load put on 36.3.

I don't think it's anything to worry about, Mike.

If you leave the router to automatically get them, then .36. comes up as the primary.

The change is to make the faster server the primary. :)

One server is 'inside' the internal network, so it's a bit faster. The other one is on the 'public' side, so it's there if the network goes down, but it's a tad slower - we are talking a couple of milliseconds only, though.
