I use Thunderbird as my mail client and lately I've been getting a lot more Spam and Junk emails. The filter in Thunderbird misses quite a lot and I'm finding I have to move most of the stuff myself. After looking around on the net Spambayes (and the similar Thunderbayes) seem like great free applications. They work by putting a local Proxy between your client and your pop3 mail provider. You then train the application and then leave it to handle your mail. I'm having trouble getting it to work with IDNet though and it's been driving me crazy... maybes because it's not possible?! :dunno:
So far I have done as directed, entered the "pop3.idnet.net" servername into the spambayes configuration area and set the port to 110. I've then set the port for the proxy to 110 and within Thunderbird set the server to be localhost on port 110.
When I try to receive mail I get a box asking for my password, but it fails the authentication saying "unsupported domain". I did a google and it's because the username in Thunderbird is "xxx.idnetfreemail". Apparently I need to change this to something like "xxx@idnet.net" (i.e. a domain name). I've tried loads of combinations but none work.
What am I doing wrong! Any advice much appreaciated, otherwise I'll give up.

I don't know the software, so a left-field answer. Why not set up an idnet.com address and forward all your idnetfreemail mail to it. That will bring IDNet's spam filters into play. If they don't do a good enough job (and I've never had any spam through IDNet), then use the idnet.com address with Spambayes.

Superstar Rik. :thumb: I was holding off creating a new @idnet.com address as all my email correspondence goes to the @idnetfreemail.co.uk address. I never thought about forwarding this however to the @idnet.com address instead, and then seeing what happens! OK, I'm off to grab a beer and try this out! Is registration for another email address instant or is there a wait?

Bah still no joy.
At least I know the forwarding is working, did some tests sending and receiving to my Hotmail account. So that is all good. Annoying that this doesn't work like! :mad: I hate it when people put instructions up on websites with these things and go "blah blah two clicks and that's it!"..... it's clearly not! lol.
I'm not sure what else to suggest. I don't know the software at all, but perhaps someone else will. :fingers:
I would suggest trying IDNet spam filters for a while, and see how it goes. I don't use them myself, as I use Mailwasher, but they are supposed to be pretty effective.
