Title: Straightening/uncurling (?) wires and cables that have "memorised" a position
Post by: mrapoc on May 26, 2009, 18:58:50
Hey

My headphone cables and a few others have really bad memory effect positioning. Say, I wrap my headphones around my player - they are now really curly and make it a bit harder to use.

Basically I'm after a way of reversing the process so they are nice and straight and new

ideas?

I generally pull cables between thumb and forefinger, Sam, giving a little 'reverse kink' where necessary. It usually works.

When i had to roll up guitar leads etc I would loop them and twist them with my fingers as they looped to straighten them, so you pull in as you loop them over your hand you twist the cable anticlockwise, it was the only way of getting a loop with no kinks, and also for looping them for when putting them back out so no tangles happened, that may help  :dunno:

Best thing to do is not twist them in the first place!  ;D

You could also try a bit of GENTLE heat. I had similar probs with my lawnmower power lead and leaving it in the sun for 30 mins last sunday softened it a good bit, making it easier to striaighten and unkink.

A hair dryer may have the same effect.  :)
