My router is set up at the moment for my system,my sons upstairs both wired and two laptops wireless with the security options as WPA2-PSK. My daughter is home and tried to connect, which she has done before, but couldnt now.I'm guessing that her laptop will only do WPA-PSK and will not now connect. I have changed to WPA2-PSK earlier this year.
If I go back down to WPA-PSK she can connect but the other two cant or they get the message asking for key each time.So is it possible to have the router set up with two different settings for different laptops, one at WPA-PSK and the others at WPA2-PSK
In a word, no, Baz. Your best bet would be a spare cable for her visits if they are occasional.
yeah had thought of that Rik, Thanks. defeats the object of wireless a bit really doesnt it :)
I'm all in favour of that, Baz, wires are faster and more secure. :)
yeah good point. next question then. At the moment I dont have any cable or spares but I have a patch cable could that work or will I need different connectors on it
it has this on the cable YFC UTP CAT.5E PATCH ISO/IEC 11801 1 & EN 50288 & TIA/EIA 568B.2 3P VERIFIED FOR GIGABIT ETHERNET 24AWG X 4P TYPE CM(UL) CMH E164469-F3 if that makes any sense ;D
A patch cable is exactly what you need, Baz. :)
ooo sounds good then. is the router hot swappable
It is, Baz.
just looking at both ends of the cable Rik and they are wired differently
In what sense, Baz?
the individual wires are in different orders for each connector pin.Thinking about why I have this cable, I used it to transfer from laptop to laptop years ago. Is it a crossover cable
It sounds like it, Baz, but many routers will auto sense that and change accordingly, so you can always try it.
but the cable itself is ok, its the right type.if needed could I put on a new end with the wires in same order
The cable will be bog standard Cat 5, Baz.
The SpeedTouch/Thomson 585s can do WPA and WPA2 at the same time.

Just to complicate matters. ;)
well just tried the cable and it seems to work ok.
Thanks again every one
They usually auto sense and switch. Makes you wonder why they can't do away with crossover cables altogether, doesn't it. :)
