Title: Windows XP accounts
Post by: Broadback on May 18, 2009, 10:12:38
I think I may have asked this question before, but if so I cannot remember the answer. When I load up I have to click on "User Account" in order for the system to completely load. "User Account" is the only account, is there a way to set XP so that it does not need this operator intervention please?

Download TweakUI from here (http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm), install and run it, then under Logon > Autologon, check the box for autlogon for your user account.

I'm prett sure this can be done in Control Panel > User Accounts, but I can't tell you exactly how at the moment.

AFAIK, you can only control whether users have to type their user name or can click on it there. You need the secondary user accounts setting displayed in CP in order to autlogin. It's easier to install TweakUI as that also gives many other useful user settings.

Here is the alternative way without TweakUI: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/tips/knox2.mspx

Thanks for your replies, I tried Lance's method first, then Rik's. Both fail to log on automatically with the message:
The system could not log on. "Make sure your user name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in the password must be in the correct case."  Underneath this message is the window requesting password, however when typing ok for the top window the screen resets to the original request to log in.
The user name (being user) is correct, but I don't know what it means by domain.

Have you tried Start>Run>control userpasswords2 ?

It opens a window that allows you to untick "Users must enter a user name..."  That should do the trick.

Broadback, did you have a password for your account?  If not then these autologin solutions will not work.  Set a password first then all will be ok using either solution.  Also it will have to be setup with an Administrator account.

This is the method I have always used. You must have a password associated with your user name though.

This method involves using 'regedit' to directly change registry entries. Only use it if you are comfortable doing that.

Thanks one and all. I did it all again for the umpteenth time yesterday evening. On switching on my trust steed it worked this morning! A mind of its own me thinks. ???

Of course, it is Eve, don't you know. My wife frequently threatens divorce due to neglect! To which I reply by asking her what she can do that Eve can't. :eyebrow:
