Can I remain logged in to IDNetters? If so, how do I do it?
Hope you can help? :dunno:
Log in via the bottom of the page, and select 'forever'
Login in via the option at the bottom of the screen, Q, and check the 'forever' box. You need to ensure you don't delete the cookie from your machine. (Or what Glenn said. ;D)
Thanks chaps! :thumb:
Followed your advice, signed in via the bottom of screen and checked 'forever' but still not logged in when I return :dunno:
Are you clearing your cookies, Q?
No, do absolutely nothing to change anything :dunno:
That's odd, then, it's the cookie which keeps you logged in. Which browser are you using?
Maybe it just needs deleting the once to sort it out? It shouldn't do,, but just maybe...
Could be corrupted, I guess...
Like many MPs... >:D
 :karmic:
:ithank:
I think that cookie sometimes doesn't digest itself properly due to the amount previously consumed. >:D
I would imagine that for whatever reason the cookie is not being stored.
Yes, we need to check once we know the browser. :)
My browser is FireFox.
Click on Tools > Options > Privacy > Show Cookies. Scroll down to idnetters.co.uk, open that folder. Do you see SMFcookie904? If so, delete it, close Firefox, then re-start, login to the forum with the 'forever' option, and see if it retains the setting after that.
If it doesn't, I'd recommend you download the CookieCuller addon, then use that to protect that cookie (and any others you want to preserve).
HTH. :)

No sign of SMFcookie904. Will sort out CookieCuller tomorrow as my evening meal is being served as I type :eek4:
:thumb:
Hi Quandam,
You need to allow the cookie to 'stick', so in Firefox, go to Tools > Options > Privacy then click the Exceptions button. In the space provided, type idnetters.co.uk, then click Allow > OK. That will then stop Firefox deleting the cookie.
Thanks Simon
Have done that, will now see if it has worked OK :fingers:
All appears to be working OK now, thanks for the help and advice :thumb:
Phew. ;)
Firefox could do with better cookie handling, in my opinion.
CookieCuller addresses a lot of the shortcomings.

I've done all that but still getting problems! I haven't changed anything, have you? >:D Going for another drink! and a lie down :shake:
What's happening, Jill, or not happening?
I have to log in all the time! :shake:
Have you checked that the cookie is on your machine?
Well I removed one which you said to remove, but it returns :dunno: off for another drink! :rant2:
You need to retain it, not remove it, Jill.

I did as you said here, but it makes no difference what I do! still have to log in.
Have you tried CookieCuller?
No. Why after all this time am I having problems? :dunno:
I have no idea, tbh, Jill, but it will relate to that cookie. Are you running any software which 'cleans up' your machine?
No, I don't think so :)
So is the cookie there when you start Firefox, before you visit the forum?
Yes :)
Then I'm stumped. :dunno: Did it use to work?
Yes, that's what I can't understand :shake:
Can you think what has changed on your machine?
Nothing, I've not used it much as I've been busy with family probs :)
You've tried logging out from the forum, deleting that cookie, clearing your cache, then starting again?
Yes, but I can try again :) Done, see what happens :shake:
Are you using CookieCuller, Jill?
If that doesn't cure it, I don't know what to suggest. :dunno:
In the cookie screen, yet clicking Exeptions, then type idnetters.co.uk and click Allow, Jill. That might work.
Yet = try.
Close. :)

Did that yesterday :)
All I can suggest is using CookieCuller and protecting the forum cookie.
:thumb: Will do if it continues :)
Rik
Sorry to have to tell you this but, I am still getting the same log in problem as in my OP. Tried all suggestions mentioned here without success (including CookieCuller) :dunno:
It is just a niggle and not a big problem but thought I would let you know the situation :thumb:
Hi Q,
Where are you logging into the forum? It may not be obvious, but you need to scroll down to the bottom of the Index page, and make sure the tick box to Always stay logged in is ticked (see attachment).
As mentioned earlier, you also need to go into Cookies > Exceptions in Firefox, and allow the idnetters.co.uk cookie to stay on the machine, otherwise Firefox will delete it each time you close the browser, if cookie permissions are set to default.
Sorry if you've already done all this. I can't think of anything else to suggest, as this has every indication of being a cookie problem.

Many thanks for your post.
I really have tried
all the suggestions several times without success. I even used CookieCuller as suggested by Rik, again, without success. I would say this, it does appear that I remain logged in for
about an hour which would coincide with the 'minutes to stay logged in' box (60mins), however tried to change this to a higher figure or remove it altogether but it always returns to 60mins. The 'Always stay logged in' box has
always been ticked. :dunno:
It really is no big deal to log in each time just a small niggle :thumb:
Thanks for your concern. :)
Which version of Windows are you using, Q, and what anti-virus/security software?
The 60 mins box should also have a Forever option.
Can you try switching to the Core theme for us, Q, and then log out and back in again, selecting the Forever option from the drop down list? I'm just wondering if this might be an isolated theme anomily?
Good thought, Simon.

I get the same problem, although it's not a problem to log in once (it is ticked always at the bottom!) :shake:
Have you tried changing theme, Jill?
No, I don't like any of them. Now if you were to bring the black back >:D
We won't. :). It's just an experiment, to see if the login "sticks" when using thr Core theme, Jill.

Have changed from Skyline to IDNet v2 core theme and this version shows me logged in for 3 days 5hrs & 6mins. I would think that the problem has been solved :fingers: :fingers: I will monitor this new theme and update here later this evening :thumb:
That's not the theme I meant, Q. There should be a forum default theme, and it's the one which isn't Skyline or v2, both of which are custom themes. The one I wanted you to try is the Core theme, which is the default forum software theme, and looks like http::/www.pc-pals.com.
:)

Chose the Core theme as suggested. Logged in and then out (Shake it all about! ;D) Always returns to IDNet.v2 version to log in again (not to the core version) and once logged in changes to core version (hope you are still with me??) This could end up as my specialist subject on Mastermind :dunno:
Any suggestions from here on?
Yup, that's how it works, Q, because if you're not logged in, it doesn't know which theme you're using, but if you stay logged in, as you now should do, the site will open on the last selected theme, i.e. the Core version. If you wish to switch back to Skyline, you can do so, and then the site should open on that, if you follow.
Just to clarify, the IDNetV2 theme is the one with the white background. Skyline is the nice one, with the darkish blue background, and the large header, with the user info on the right, and Core is more greyish blue, with the user info on the left side of the header.
I think IDNet v2 is nice too. ;)
Simon
All appears to be working fine after your advice and help :thumb:
Many thanks for your patience in the matter :thnks:
So we have a problem with the default theme... Lance!!!
It seems to have been a one off, so, with all due respect to Q, I'm not sure it requires further investigation. :)
Jill still has a problem, I think.
From what I can gather, Jill has yet to do what's been suggested as a remedy.

You only have to change the theme to establish the cookie, Jill, after than you can switch back to whatever you prefer.

Well it didn't work :shake:
In which case, your browser can't be storing the cookie properly. :dunno:
:shake:
Jill, the only thing I can think of, assuming you've done all of the above, is to go into Core, log out, delete the cookie, then log back in and change the theme back to the one you want. :)
Is there anything running on your machine, Jill, which cleans out cookies?
Oh, and don't forget to select Forever when you log back in.

Have to tell you, still got the problem re logging in. Tried all you suggested but, still no joy. Don't worry, It is not a big deal logging in each time :thumb:
I can undoubtedly live with the situation without losing any sleep

It's very strange, though, and a little frustrating that I can't get inside your machine, as I've been running forums for over 6 years, and whenever this has cropped up, it's
always turned out to be a cookie problem.
Just to eliminate the Skyline theme (although I don't think it is that), have you tried switching to Core, and staying on it for a while to see if the problem is still evident? If not, it would help us if you could do so, as we'll then be certain it's not (or is!) theme related.
Thanks for your patience, Q! :karmic:
Hi,
Have you been logging in from another machine or your phone? I've come across some sites that only let you have one login cookie at once so if I log in from my PC at work then the stored login cookie on my laptop becomes invalid and I have to log in again when I next use it.
Cheers,
Paul.
Good thought, Paul, but I don't think that's the case here, as I can stay loghff in on both my phone and PC, and laptop, come to that, all at the same time. :)
Agreed, I'm usually logged in on two machines at any time.
Me too (my Mac and my iPhone).

Thanks for your reply.
Have just selected 'Core' and will give it a go over the next 24 hours or so and see what happens. :fingers:

I'm using core
If the problem is still evident in Core, that means it's not theme related.
:stars:
It has to be something to do with your machine, setup, Jill. Without access to it, it's hard to say what.
I'm trying IE, but I've not changed anything :) all these years posting and suddenly it decides to play up :dunno:
Neither have we, Jill. :)

IE behaving the same way as FF :shake:
So it's not browser behaviour. Can you try from another machine, Jill?
Will have to wait, sorry, off to Glos. for surprise 60th party and to look at the tall ships
Enjoy. :bye:
Simon
Bad news I am afraid, the latest 'cure' did not work, still cannot save a log in :shake: You have suggested to Jill to use another PC, well, I used my Samsung Netbook and that appears to retain the log in feature without problem, so, it would point to a 'problem' (very manageable, and not a big deal) with my desktop PC 8)
Sorry to have to tell you this but it is the current position. I do understand your situation, but honestly, I can deal with the 'problem' without too much trouble :thumb:
Many thanks for your help :)
Using a second machine does eliminate the forum software, Q, thanks for trying that. It would seem that something is corrupting or, more likely, deleting the forum cookie on your desktop machine. Can you identify any software differences between them eg AV software etc?

I would say that they are basically the same as I, as you would expect, set them up the same for ease of use. It is a mystery :dunno:
It is. Pack up your machine and bring it round, let's get to work on it. ;)
Try running a full AV scan along with a full spy/malware scan using Malwarebytes/SAS then see if the problem still happens
I'm just glad it's not a forum software issue!
Hi Q, thanks for trying our suggestions.
This really is a mystery, and I'd love to get to the bottom of it. Do you have any type of 'cleaning' utility on your PC, which might relate to web browsing, such as CCleaner, TracksEraser, WebWasher, or any other utility which is designed to 'optimise' settings? It would be useful if you could give us a list of what's currently running on your machine, especially which anti-virus, anti-spyware, or third party firewall you may be using. With respect to your privacy, if you'd rather PM me (or any of the staff) with the details, we'd happily take a look.
Of course, you may just want to leave this alone now, so please do say if so, and we'll stop bugging you! ;)
Simon
The odd thing is that I have exactly the same software downloaded on to the Samsung Netbook as the main PC. Both have CCleaner and Avast as the AV programme. I did think it could be CCleaner but that only comes into operation when I actually call it into action, it doesn't 'optimise settings' unless I make the command, between this operation (several days) I lose the log in 'lock'.
Basically, all that is on the desktop PC is on the Samsung Netbook. It is something very simple (you know what I mean?) that is causing the problem but what it is :dunno:
I would say that the way to go is shrug the old shoulders and carry on with enjoying this lovely summer (so far!). Let's face it, all I have to do, on the desktop at least, is make an extra click! Not a problem within the big picture.
Many thanks for your efforts :comp: (for that is what it is)
CCleaner can be set to clear cookies automatically. I wonder if one machine has a different CCleaner setting to the other? Just in case it is that, how about (in CCleaner) going to Options > Cookies, and add the idnetters.co.uk cookies to the Cookies to Keep list?
It would be nice to get to the bottom of it for all that, Q. Do you have any different addons in Firefox?

I can't stand and type at the same time. ;)
By George, I think he's got it! :eek4:
IDNetters URL was listed as 'don't keep'. Now transferred to 'keep' list and hopefully :fingers: :fingers: :fingers: Will keep you posted as to progress from now on.

I'm with Lance, Q, standing and eating is fine, but reaching the keyboard is a strain. :)
:solved: Yes, it has been solved. :great: Thanks for sticking to the task guys, I must admit I was on the point of giving up but your tenacity finally solved the problem. :thnks:
Once we get our teeth in... ;D
I thought we'd get there in the end! :thumb:
I don't have CCleaner >:D
What do you have though, Jill? Have you tried a second machine yet?
Not yet, need to ask son :)
Avast, SuperAntiSpyware
Do the second machine check. If that's OK, then it's a setting on your machine.
OK, will do :thumb: would be nice to find out what it is! :shake:
It would, but it will be a process of elimination.
As usual :D
Jill
Everything here now ticking over nicely ;) Stick with the chaps, it will get sorted :thumb: CCleaner was my problem and undoubtedly you will have a very similar situation. Keep the faith! (I know how difficult that can be)
