Hi have been with Idnet about 12 months. Have had a solid 1.5mb - 2.5mb download speed (don't laugh Virgin gave me 0.25 - 1mb) :blush:.
Between midnight 10/05/09 and 19:00 11/05/09 I had a constant 0.36mb :dunno:.
Now I have a whopping 4mb :eek4:.
Does anyone know the reason and can I now look forward to 4 mb all the time ::)?
A look at your router stats might help up guess. My guess is something got fixed/changed which was putting out noise affecting your line. Examples are things like street lights.
I agree with Lance. It's likely that the quality of the line has improved for some reason.
I too have been with IDNet for nearly 12 months now. In all of that time, I have suffered 2/3 disconnects a day which keeps down my IP profile. I have done all of things everyone suggested (i.e. faceplates etc.) but the general feeling from everyone is that there must be some noise around somewhere.
In the last week though, I have not been getting any disconnects and my downstream speed is the highest I have ever seen it and consequently my profile is the highest it has ever been.
It's good news but strange as nothing obvious has changed. The exchange I am connected to is very small + I live in rural place with no street lights. Not complaining though!
BT are constantly working on the network, so it may be that some maintenance, or a repair that they have carried out, has had a 'fringe' benefit.

i don't want to sound gloomy but its going to rain today, if your connection drops again then i would suspect water in a ducting/hole somewhere.

This test was done at 03:00!!! So it is not down to 'Traffic'
It looks like the line is unstable, the profile is lower than it should be, but the throughput is lower still. Have you talked to support?

No, my speed is random.
To be honest if I stay above 2mb I am happy. Which I was for approximately 12 months. But on average I am lucky to get 1.5mb but mostly sub 1mb.

The usual reason is that your router has re-synched for a while at a lower speed. 0800 701 2000.

Sorry but heres another question.
I have looked around the problem solving parts of this site and it appears to me that everyone leaves their routers permently on.
I only turn mine on whilst I want to go online.
So is it better to leave it on all the time?
Personally, I leave my router on 24/7, with two exceptions. If I'm going to be away, or if there's thunder around, I unplug it from the mains and the phoneline (in that order).
It shouldn't do any harm to turn it off, but routers are designed to be run permanently.
So, the 'very nice man' has just phoned me back. BT say there are a few errors on my line and they are resetting my profile in the next 24hrs.
He went on to mention testing the router directly under the socket face plate, filters and internal wiring (all of which are the same as they have always been).
So, could anyone give be a ball park figure as to the cost of a phone line rewire? I live in a bungalow and I am thinking I would like to have multiple master sockets instead of splitters.
Also do BT do it or other companies?
BT can do it, but other companies will be cheaper. You can only have one master socket, but were you thinking of filtered faceplates rather than masters? I really don't have an idea on price, unfortunately, but getting BT out to do it would be well in excess of £150.

You'd certainly get all of that. If you use an ADSL Nation filtered faceplate on the master, you can put most extensions on the filtered side, but run the one for the router from the unfiltered side, terminating that in another filtered faceplate.
I posted a while back about the quite sudden stability on my line resulting in a higher profile. I know it was suggested that the dry weather may have made a difference but we have had lots of rain of late and suffer no disconnects at all.
The odd thing is that (almost daily) the downstream connection is getting faster. Two months ago the max downstream connection I could get (at tops) was 5400. It is now just over 7000.
Obviously, I'm really happy about it but can't quite understand the reason. I'm out in the sticks, small exchange (Marshbrook – 2.4km away) which is not not due the major upgrades until Q3 2001.
Any idea's about what's going on?
Best guess would be that BT are renewing cables or re-making joints.
