Title: New Isp
Post by: the-bruce on Apr 07, 2009, 15:13:11
Hi guys, im with Adsl24 atm, but since Entanet started traffic shaping/throttling/restricting whatever you want to call it  :)

Im looking for a new isp ...

Ive narrowed it down to 2

Idnet and Vivaciti

I have a good line, My Sync speed is 8128

So i would be keen to know what speeds are like in the evening/week-ends etc..

Any replies would be gratefully received.

Cheers Brucey

Hi Bruce and welcome to the forum. :welc: :karma: For me, speeds never change, IDNet drive my line as fast as it will go, 24/7. Admittedly, I have a lousy line with a 2.5M profile, but I think most people will tell you speeds are consistently high. Pings are good too, on an interleaved line, I average 22ms to IDNet.

I thought Vivaciti were an Enta-reseller?

Hi The-bruce,   :welc:

Idnet do not throttle and try to keep spare capacity available, so there is no congestion within their systems, day or night.  Idnet do not close or restrict any ports and there is no traffic shaping.  You have your monthly bandwidth allowance and have unfettered use of it.  Additional bandwidth is £1 per Gb.

Any shortcomings on BTs network is of course common to all ISPs.

Idnet offer a 1month contract, so you try it without any risk.

Ah, I thought I'd read somewhere they were an Enta-reseller, so I wasn't wholly wrong. Often, the clue is in the fact they don't have their own forum on ThinkBroadband. :)

Off-peak is midnight to 9am. :)

One other thing I should mention, Brucey, is that once you sign up with IDNet, and get your login details, you can set up and use immediately your email addresses (as many as you want), webspace, blog space and photo album.

:welc: The off peak period still counts to your download total, uploads are unrestricted.

So free usage from midnight to 9am nice :D

Finally ...

Is there a control panel to monitor my peak usage?

And lastly :)

I presume i can get interleaving switched off if i require?

Cheers Again Guys

There's a control panel and an optional RSS feed. IDNet will get interleaving turned off for you, but the BT system may have other ideas and turn it straight back on. ;)

Off peak isn't free usage, it only actually applies to Home SuperMax, where you have a 30GB peak and 30GB off-peak limit. OTOH, uploads don't count towards your allowance on any package.

I don't think you'll regret it, I've been with IDNet for almost 2.5 years and it's been a great experience. I've even moved my phone line over to them now. :)

The only thing I was going to mention was that Vivacity is an Entanet reseller, but I see that this has been mentioned. Go with IDNet, you won't be disappointed. :)

Hi there Bruce,

Is that "thebruce," one time of the Thinkbroadband Virgin Media ADSL Forum and publisher of the the spoof Braveheart video? If it is, then you might recollect we were debating the merits of ADSL24 in Jan 2008. In the end I decided on IDNET, because of the no throttling policy and having checked Entas central useage. All I can tell you is I have never found any evidence of IDNET related congestion. I rather like the hands on management and tech support that picks up on the third ring. For me IDNET is an unconditional recommend.

Hi Brucey, :welc:

I can only echo what has already been said.  I've been with IDNet for just over 18 months now, and while there have been occasional glitches, mainly with email, IDNet have been quick to respond, and their customer service is second to none.  I don't think you'll regret the move.
