I'm just curious to find out how many users we have on each platform. I've given you three votes, so if you have multiple OS, you can select them all. (Of course, someone will have four or more but, hey, I tried. :))

Can't see the poll, so will vote later, but Windows XP and Vista for me, not counting the Eee PC, which is Ubuntu.

I would say there's quite a few here with multiple machines.  It depends if we're voting for our preferred option.

For me......Vista and believe it or not, due to work reasons, Windows 98!

I would be hard to poll for preference, I think (ie I can't think of a way to do it :)), but I'm interested to see the spread of OS in use - I sense that the membership here is not typical, ie 90% Windows.

It was more OS than hardware I was interested in, Alan, but as people can run Windows on a Mac, I was trying to be as encompassing as possible.

I tried installing MAC OS ( Leopard ) it would install and run ( sorta ) but didn't like my hard drive configuration

8 gig memory
3 TB internal HD storage
2 TB external HD storage
Assorted optical and flash drives.

I tried Hackintosh, but it wouldn't run

I run Mac OSX Leopard and XP Pro on the Intel Mac using VMWare Fusion, I also have an old Dell laptop which has XP Pro on it because I have an old Windows database programme that catalogues my rather large collection of classical CDs and LPs. I now use the catalogue on the Intel Mac using Fusion, but keep it up to date on the old Dell just in case. It took me six months to input the data and I don't want to lose it all!

Although XP has never let me down, I do find it infuriating at times >:(, probably caused by my own lack of familiarity with it ;)

Can't really do justice two the voting categories either I am afraid so I am attaching my "Work in progress" spreadsheet.

I view it these days with OpenOffice's Calc but it's in xls format so should be OK with Excel as it started life there.

There is also a vintage box in the attic with a Cyrix 233 MHz processor in it with Windows 2000 SPx on it that I am pretty sure still works. Well it did not long before it went into the attic!  :)

Ah there is also the box I cobbled together with the ABit mobo I got on eBay last year for the purpose and my old well tried and tested AMD 1400 MHz Thunderbird processor, to give the Ubuntu that some folks were raving about a try.  I just wouldn't want to say in the poll that I was an Ubuntu Linux man. Nuff said elsewhere already!  :no:

These latter two are not on the, "Work in progress" spreadsheet for what I trust are obvious reasons!  ;)

So far it seems there are almost as many Vista users as there are XP users and every one else are trailing behind.

Does this mean that:

A) Vista is more popular than people admit.

B) Some people will never change or are slow to change to new systems.

C) We can't afford the high prices of a Mac.         :evil:

I have said it before Den, I have Vista, I use Vista but I would be hard pressed to say I like Vista.
What is does for me that XP does not is very hard to identify and simply finding your way round Control Panel for example, when you know what you want to do but can't find the new peg it's hung on is irksome to put it mildly. Change for changes sake as someone else put it.  :thumbd:

I'm using the laptop more and more these days as the gaming is now done on Xbox360.  The quad system is mostly used now for media streaming to the Xbox.

I don't know anyone who would change an XP machine to Vista, and I suspect that most Vista users have had it bestowed upon them by buying it pre-installed on new machines.  Some like it, and it works well on most newer machines.  Personally, I don't mind it but given the choice, would stick with XP, at least until Windows 7 comes along.  I'd quite like to have a play with a Mac, but don't have the room to run several machines.  :)

I think it's that people have bought new PCs and not had a choice.

I changed because my desktop running XP was becoming a pain and I had Vista on my Asus laptop and could not and still can not see anything wrong with it. I use them both for business and find them very stable.  ;D I must be the odd one out.  :whistle:

OS are like food, Den, some people will hate a particular version while others love it. My assessment was, and is, that Vista was a marketing release, rather than a technical one, and that it offered me nothing I wanted. XP is, for me, stable and functional, so I see no benefit in upgrading. Another analogy might be found in photography. For many people, a point and shoot camera with the camera controlling everything is just what they want, while for others, full control over the exposure and focus is more suited to their needs.

I have changed one PC to Vista, another to Win 7, the 3rd still runs XP, and the server is running WHS

I do have 4 retail versions of XP pro so if I want to, I can install it on any of the above.

Only reason I have Vista is because it came preinstalled on the laptop when I bought it.  I used to dislike it with a passion as machines at my old work place were slower than that a cat with no legs.  I must say though that the laptop runs it flawlessly and I've not encountered any problems.  I like it.  The ready boost feature is pretty cool but I've not really had a reason to use it.  Nice way of easily adding "system RAM" without taking the sides off though lol.

My desktop XP machine is bulletproof.  It has NEVER crashed.  Even into 6 hours Call of Duty 4 sessions it was rock solid.  As operating systems go I think it's great.  It is starting to look a bit dated though.  Not a major problem as there are loads of skinning programs out there.

I wouldn't upgrade a machine from XP to Vista though. Thats just wrong.

Not really, but it is interesting to see the uptake of Mac OS and Unix amongst our ranks. I'm sure the figures would have been different a year ago (and maybe we should make this an annual poll so that we can see the changes?).

Missed the poll, but I use Linux (not Unix). Kubuntu Gutsy on my desktop (Matilda) with Windows 7 as an alternative on bootup, and Ubuntu Intrepid on my main laptop (Annika) with Windows Vista on there to keep Currys happy. I have Android on my phone, and Kubuntu Hardy on my other laptop (with Windows 2000 installed but not working).

Busily trying to install osx86 on an intel desktop PC, but no luck so far. Help is at hand, so perhaps by tomorrow we will have cracked it..


I have built another top-of-the-range PC from new components this week and am slowly building Windows Xp up to my standard software/tweaks level, I had forgotten what a PITA Windows can be. 

Saved out my Ubuntu software and tweaks to a configuration file and simply pointed the new Ubuntu install to it during setup and the whole thing just came up to the desktop for the first time fall software packages fully functional and up to date.

Which distro of OSX86 are you trying Alan?

The only driver I need to set up now is for an ATI HD4850 graphics card.

Running Windows 7 (7057) and OSX 10.5.6 on separate machines  :)
