Title: I dont want to format it but.. [badly infected system]
Post by: mrapoc on Mar 02, 2009, 21:26:23
I have a laptop to fix at the moment and its not letting me do anything.

It freezes up the start bar or msconfig almost straight away, or when i try to apply settings (turn everythin off in msconfig for example)

Safe mode scan with super antispyware does detect stuff such as antivirus 2008 but it needs to reboot..which obviously wont work :(

Ideas?

Thanks guys

Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) in safe mode, Sam?  Alternatively, there's a manual removal process (which I haven't tried) here:

Malwarebytes +1, I use it at work, a great piece of software

I know its not popular with some but Avast Antivirus allows boot time scans. Might be worth a try if you can install it in safe mode.

But is it likely to get all it needs in safe mode?

we shall see

Stupid question, but have you tried msconfig from within Safe Mode?

Yes but it was still unearthly slow when booted (10 mins for my computer to show..)

So i backed everything up in safe mode and have proceeded to format/install xp (in turkish lol)

To prevent this happening again I think I shall put avira antivirus on (more agressive than eset so less chance of infection) and immunization from spyware blaster & spybot s&d

Are you sure the problem is malware?

Best cure for that, Sam, is to hide all the email clients. ;D
