I decided last week after doing some research to buy a Vista premium upgrade disc and do a clean install on my other desktop which was ok but I like Vista. So after reading volumes of reviews and pros and cons I ordered it and yesterday started the install.
There were many ways to get around things which proved to be confusing so I decided to just follow the instructions and not the way suggested. There were a few issues with that machine which being xp I could not work out and it was gathering dust.I had hoped that for a few pounds I could breathe new life into this pc,well its not two years old and its spec was plenty for Vista......
Today the machine is now Vista premium,at the moment I have no sound on it,which I assume to be drivers.but a lot of issues have now gone and still have an odd looking screen on boot up but Im investigating this but on the whole I think it was worth it.........even for the experience ;D
Well done, David. As you say, the sound issue probably is drivers.
Or the speakers not being plugged in. ;) Well done, David. :thumb:
Thanks Simon thinking of getting a new graphics card and monitor ;D what am I like ? :D
Thanks Rik no its not speakers ;D  as if ?

It certainly sounds like drivers, David. You'll probably find that Windows Update will download a lot of them for you.
I take it you used the install Vista as an evaluation and then upgrade it method to achieve a clean install? ;)
That seems to be a PC World/Currys/Dixons exclusive, David.
Well done David. I have just got Vista Ultimate from my son (an MSDN subscription) and have replaced my Vista Basic with this version. There is absolutly no difference in speed or performance and is just as stable and I do like all the Ultimate extras you can download.
I have grown to love Vista after use and can find little wrong with it.
Mu machine is a Celeron 430 with 2GB memory and a cheapo Nvidia GeForce 8400GS but I can still get all the Aero experience with it and no perfomrance hit, but then I don't play games as I have no interest in them. :thumb:
Me neither Alf.its been interesting I came across a lot of reviews of xp on my travels recently and I was amazed as there were a lot of very similar things said about xp,took up too much space was slow nearly all the things said about vista,Its just a personal thing but vista for me at least,is easier to understand and much more user friendly and there is better things like the loathed Aero, which I must admit I love :thumb:

Can you identify the drivers?
Yes when I explore the content of the partition I can see where they are
David, what is the model of PC, motherboard or sound card?
Also, if you run the MS Vista compatibility test what does it say?
Just pull them off to a flash device, then and point Vista at that to install them, or what Glenn says.
Try sisoftware lite to identify the soundcard here (http://www.sisoftware.co.uk/index.html?dir=&location=downandbuy&langx=en&a=) Then hopefully a driver can be found.

Under device manager any yellow ? marks and their title?
There was Steve a yellow triangle with an exclaimation mark in there.but I have now resolved this and it reads ok,when I go into properties it states this is working properly ?
Code 43 is showing
Have you actually installed the new drivers, David? Code 43 indicates there's still a driver issue, according to this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123).
Is the installed driver in sound and audio properties the same version as the one highlighted by Glen? Suggest try to reinstall pointing it at the Realtek directory containing the latest driver or try rescan for hardware changes.
Just put a dvd in and thats fine, checked the DM and went into properties and it states working properly.I was thinking bios update perhaps.everything else is fine.
What I have seen is the high definition audio device is working fine (well by the volume light) but the windows media player is showing no signs and its baffling.I will crack this

Would this solve the probs.......?
David, try running the soundcard setup file from the disk using administrator (run as administrator). Don't let the cd run automatically but find the setup.exe file to run from explorer. Running setups as administrator often cures problems installing stuff. I know you are probably set up as an administrator account but that doesn't work the same in Vista as it did in XP.
No CD Alf thats why I thougtht replacing the card may do the job as I would get a CD I would presume.I got too invloved yesterday and was still on the thing well into the wee small hours (its my nature not to give in)I think the key is vista v xp I will switch the thing on in a while and try again
Thanks Alf :thnks:

I've seen that on my machine, when it's booting, when looking for a boot device it's trying to see if it can boot from the Network, David, you can stop it from trying but you would need to go into the BIOS to do it.

Which sound card are you going for?
Just got back from Maplins settled for a Prosound PC1 soundcard its vista compatable Full duplex playback and recording
Microphone echo effects
ACPI compliant power down management
Stereo front and rear 3.5 jack
It comes with the CD which I am hoping will sort this problem out.for under £10 and a little work I may have a better sound than before.
Looks fairly easy to install the hardest bit seems to ensure all the old player is out of the machine. :fingers:
Check the BIOS settings, David.
Daft question Rik what am I looking for,I did ask the guy in there if the BIOS would need changing he said no you dont need to go there ???
If it's an onboard card, and I assume it is, then there will be an option in the BIOS to disable it, David. I have one disabled because I preferred to use a Soundblaster.
I thought that and you are correct there is, thanks again will ensure this is disabled, get the old software out and then hopefully it will have been done and I could have saved a lot of time ;D still learning all the time ;D

Well after the sound card success I have decided on changing the video card as some screensavers cant be shown because of this Im thinking of upgrading this as well
Currently installed is Radeon 200 series.
Any recommendations ?
How much do you want to spend, David? They go from thirty quid to well in excess of three hundred.
Well the first thing is I dont game so there is no need to worry about the high standard they demand or wish for.I guess £50-£70 if that would do the job.
Found a Radeon 960XT for £32 but will have to chack out others for price etc
I see mine is a 256 MB is that the highest which I can buy for it without having to upgrade other things ?
This is sitting on silly money at present
