Title: I'm bored - where is everyone?
Post by: Rik on Feb 28, 2009, 17:45:44
Anyway, given I wasn't posting, I thought I'd run a few speedtests...

Speedtest.net:

Speed.io:
(http://speed.io/pics/1767/4392/speed.io.png) (http://www.speed.io)

Namesco:
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1235844299&v=6394953 which shows:
Download Speed: 2629 kbps (328.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed:    706 kbps (88.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

BT:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 2848 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  832 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 2500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2349 kbps

Not bad for a 2500 profile. :)

That's it, Bob. Your speed is right for the profile you will be getting from that sync speed, but on a 48db line, you should be achieving much better speeds. Do you have an NTE5 master socket, the kind where the bottom part of the face plate can be removed? If so, have you tried connecting the router in the test socket which is revealed there?

No Rick, our telephone system is antique, it has GPO on the junction box, the master skt looks like it was put in by a DIY er, and the feed to the house on poles, so I am quite happy to have a broadband connection at all, most of the villages near here are still on dial up.

It might be worth having a word with support to see if they can suggest anything, Bob, but I suspect it would probably end up with a BT visit which would cost you money. :(

For anyone, who may or may not be bored, what do you make of this conundrum!
Here is my result at 19:10 1/3/9

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/420875427.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

This puzzles me because it suggests an IP Profile of 3000 kbps and my current sync speed is as follows:
DSL               Down  Up
Current Rate:  3456 kbs    448 kbs
and has not been above 3500 kbps in months due to my Noise Margin being set at 15 dB, see below:

Time Line                          Rate Max1 Max2 Max3 Mgn1 Mgn2 Attn Pwr
2009/03/01 19:15:07 GMT 1  3456 3464 2372 2372 15.0  11.0 40.5 18.8

A further puzzle is that I have started to suffer from the 12 (plus a bit) day reboot issue and it last happened on Friday evening and I re-synced at under 3000 kbps with a consequent throughput of 1945 kbps. An instant drop in IP Profile to 2000 kbps is what I suspected. (How I love BT)!

The reason this is a puzzle is that I have the BT software that I have always had and being a single SSID model I have relied quite successfully on the DNS poisoning technique I learnt about from this forum and not the alternative unlocking firmware.

Model: BT2700HGV
Hardware Version: 2701-100588-005
Hardware Options: Wireless present
DSL Modem Type: ADSL
Current Software: 5.29.107.19
DSL Modem: 7.2.2

I was under the impression that the BT firmware was immune to the 12 day reboot issue but it has been happening too regularly to be a coincidence, in my opinion, in recent times!

The first puzzle I mentioned is how, after just under 2 days from the reboot when I synced at under 3000 kbps and found my throughput at 1945 kbps, can I have what must be an IP Profile of 3000 kbps to permit the thoughtput you see above namely 2916 kbps, when the current sync speed is 3456 kbs   ????

I have tried BBMax a couple of times and SpeedTest. net and they concur with each other. I haven't got the patience to go play with the BT Speed Tester so my IP Profiles are deductions based on the BBMax and SpeedTest. net results.

One of life's little mysteries or does someone know better.............  ;)

It's worth trying the BT test, Les, as it's been much more reliable of late. That will establish your profile and it does seem less prone to distortion by AV software.

Well OK, as you thought it worthwhile, I ran the BT Speed test and got this:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 3456 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 3000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 2808 kbps

As I surmised I have an IP Profile of 3000 kbps.

Just like yesterday these are my current stats. this evening:
DSL                Down        Up
Current Rate:  3456 kbs   448 kbs
Max Rate:  3456 kbs   1048 kbs

The 2Wire's "Current Rate" concurs with what BT call my "DSL connection rate" and I refer to as the "synch speed".

The question remains how did I get this IP Profile when I have not synced above 3500 kbps since last Autumn?

Have BT changed the 500 kbps band between maximum throughput and synch rate rounded to the nearest 500 kbps?
I recall mention some time ago about the possibility of this 500 figure coming down to 250 kbps but have heard no more about it.  :dunno:

Finally does anyone else with a Single SSID 2700HGV and the BT firmware get affected by the 12 day router reboot problem?

From the FAQ sticky...

Quote
Sync between 3424 & 3999 = Profile of 3000

So you can see that you are just high enough to get the profile you're on!

As for the BT software on the 2wire, I've not heard of anyone having the 300 hours problem. I've only seen it affect the SBC firmware.

3456 does get you a 3000 profile, Les, the range for the latter is 3424-3999.

Thanks for putting me right chaps!

You can learn something new every day without a doubt!  :)

I will have to keep my eye on this reboot every 12 and a bit days phenomenon with my BT firmware.
I also have a suspicion that going to close to my router with the vacuum or should that be cyclone (not wishing to name drop) cleaner has the same effect!  ;)

The picture below is about as good as gets for me at the moment!

With these stats from the info. I was given earlier in this thread by Lance and Rik you can see that it is skin of the teeth stuff to keep my IP Profile of 3000 kbps!

DSL                    Down       Up
Current Rate:      3424 kbs   448 kbs
Max Rate:           3424 kbs   1056 kbs
Current Connection:
Current Noise Margin:  15.0 dB   25.0 dB
Current Attenuation:  40.4 dB   26.0 dB
Current Output Power:  19.1 dBm   11.9 dBm

If you could get that target margin down, Les, you'd get to about 4.5M.

I know Rik I have been there in the past when the target noise margin was 12 dB

It's the drop in the evenings that kills me. These are the Stats now:
DSL                         Down  Up
Current Rate:       3424 kbs   448 kbs
Max Rate:            3424 kbs   1056 kbs
Current Connection:
Current Noise Margin:  13.0 dB   25.0 dB
Current Attenuation:  40.4 dB   26.0 dB
Current Output Power:  19.0 dBm   11.9 dBm

and that 13 dB will be 10 by 8 PM

IDNet did get the 15 db reduced to 9 dB for me last year and I was synching 1000 kbps higher but it did not last long before it was back at 15 dB.  :(

Maybe 9 dB was aiming too low and I should ask again for 12dB but I feel that this is just being a nuisance as with a 3000 kbps IP Profile I can do all I need to. So I have my  :fingers: that it will stay there.

You may have to make the classic trade of speed versus stability, Les. I prefer the latter, so opted for a 9db margin to give me it. It's not ideal, but we have to make the best of a BT bad job. :(

Is your 9 dB fixed Rik?

When IDNet got BT to reduce my margin from 15 to 9 dB at the first unscheduled router reboot it went straight back to 15 dB.
I would be fine with the trade off of stability for the speed advantage I would get if the target noise margin would stay at 9 dB or even 12 dB for that matter!
Title: Re: I'm bored - where is everyone?
Post by: Rik on Mar 07, 2009, 18:27:53
Yes, mine is fixed, Les, but my line is not unstable enough to trigger any raise - on average these days I'll only re-sync every month or so.

Can anyones target noise margin on their line be fixed? If so perhaps I should ask support if mine could be set at a fixed value.
Title: Re: I'm bored - where is everyone?
Post by: Rik on Mar 07, 2009, 18:36:07
It could when I did it, but it's fixed as a minimum - iow, if DLM kicked in, it could be raised, but it won't be lowered back to 6.

Ah I see.

The lowest mine goes is 10 dB from the 15dB in daylight hours. I don't recall a 6 dB since I stopped using my old Netgear router! With that one it was always down from 6 dB in daylight to 0 db in the evenings or below with the negative "hex type numbers" you told me about round this time last year, before I got my 2700HGV. I guess fixed at a minimum is no good to me. :(

Not a lot. However, if you can ever get back to 12, having it fixed there might be a good move, reasonable speed and reasonable stability.
