Hi All,
Just completed a successful migration today and great to see my speeds leap from 1-2Mb (Orange)......
to around 6Mb.
I ended up putting up with the cr*p speeds, coz it was more aggro than it was worth trying to get anything done.Truely Painful....as I am sure many of you know.
Anyway.....I know people have differing ideas on this one ...but should I leave my modem on during the 10 day training period...?
Any advice would be grand...
And finally a word of Thanx to Stevelondon for the nod to come to IDnet.
(maybe should now remove that post from OrangeProbs before we get overrun by a stampede of enraged loonies.....!)

Hi, and welcome to an Orange free world. Not one to burst bubbles, but give it a week or two before putting the flags out. I dumped Orange for IDnet and a month later Orange still managed to kill my connection (with more than a little help from BT).
Having said that - I'm sure I'm a one off, and in any event, IDNet CS (Miriam & Andrew) are second to none - so still no complaints from me.
Re your specific question, after much research, try to keep your modem on - but if you get a power outage etc. don't sweat the small stuff.
Steve
Hi Icen
Welcome to our world, here the future is bright, it's not just a slogan. :)
I echo what Steve says, leave your modem on. I've seen lots of suggestions that you should power off for 15 minutes a day etc, but I just connected and left it to find its level. Expect some disconnects initially, as BT's software tries to find the most stable rate for your line, you'll also probably see some speed fluctuations for the same reason, but it will soon settle down. One thing you must avoid doing is forcing re-sync events - if you have more than 10 an hour, BT will see it as a sign of instability and drop your profile.
Hi Icen and welcome to the forums.
I used to turn my router off during my training period when i went to bed and it would be off all the next day if i wasn't home .
If the wife used it during the day she would then leave it on as i believe turning it on and off regularly is not a good idea, this also applies after your training period.
Hi and welcome.
Re turning router off, the traditional advice has been to power off and back on once a day - e.g. turn it off at night and on again next morning. This resynching reputedly helps Max to get you a good profile. That is what I did.
So now you have advice to Leave it On AND advice to Turn it off once a day. The choice is yours,
However, everyone is agreed that whipping it on and off frequently is definitely a BAD thing, so don't do that. That will be guaranteed to give you a poor profile.
Thanks Gents for your advice.
I will turn it off overnight and reboot early in the morning .....seems to make sense.
Also...I've been checking the Bandwidth Graph on the IDNet site and seem to be using loads more bandwidth than I normally would...whilst browsing pages...not downloading even.
The figure even goes up after an hour of no activity.
At this rate I'll be paying ££££'s ...in extras
Can anyone advise...?
Icen
P.S. I also monitor my bandwidth with SurplusMeter.....and this is also showing increased usage.
If your own monitoring of bandwidth matches the IDnet monitoring, which I believe is what you are saying, then it's not a fault at IDNet's end.
Pse don't be offended, but do you have a wireless connection? If so is it encrypeted to the highest standard so no neighbours are using it?
Are you downloading torrents that you'd forgotten about?
Is anybody else using the computer, even though they say they're not?
Click Control/Alt/Delete and check what applications are running. You can also check what Processes to see if any are spyware etc, but this takes a bit longer. You can find what they all are and whether they should be there on google.
Thanks Nerval
No....I don't have a wireless setup....and unless my 1 year ols daughter is on the computer when my back is turned...(which would be more worrying, come to think of it)...nothing is any different except my ISP.
I will check my security though....I am on a Mac so have never really bothered about viruses and spyware...but I probably should.
Cheers Icen ;D
Your router lights and/or net meter will show you activity when something is happening, so if that's the case and all should be quiet, it's "just" a matter of finding out what.
Don't know Macs tho so can't tell you how to find out :D
Wife/inlaws/visitors not using it either?
p.s. If you've been reading all Rik's posts, you'll have used an awful lot of bandwidth

They're the worst. Do you know where your credit card is? She'll be ordering online from the Early Learning Centre.
I know.....I used to tell my son that the Early Learning Centre was a museum.....ha ha....we just used to wander around looking at things....then one day he sussed other people were walking out with things.....still it was good while it lasted.....! ;)

Hi Icen
You made a good choice please excuse these lot they are nutters LOL (joking) :timeout: :banana2: :out:
Make sure when you read the usage page that your not looking at the figures what IDNet predict what you would have used by the end of the month instead of what it is so far.
Anyway welcome from me ;D
