Title: FF3 - how do I tell which fonts are missing
Post by: Rik on Feb 07, 2009, 15:48:37
As you know, FF3 displays heiroglyphics if a font is not available, ie a box with the hex code for the character. Is there any way to work out which fonts it's looking for?

No, I can't do what I was hoping to as the glyphs are in the post... Anyway, that's what it looks like if you don't have the right font, in this case, Chinese.

I see the 'hex boxes' that you can see in the screenshot, Ted. If I paste to a WP, I get boxes or question marks, depending on the font in use.

Looking at the Page source for this page, and then View, Character encoding, one of the fonts is "Chinese simplified (GB2312)"

Well, I have the answer for today, I'll cut'n'paste next time I see the boxes. :) (This is all probably down to me minimising the number of active fonts, old ATM habit...)

You quite often see these in Ebuyer specifications. Take a look at:-

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/149238/show_product_specifications?spectype=extended

In the extended spec section, in the 'expansion/conectivity' section.

Piccy below from my FF3.

I can't see any indication of font in the source either, though I may just be missing the blindingly obvious.

   font-family:Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif;

Thanks, Baz. I have those installed, so it must be an encoding issue. You wouldn't think it would happen with a Uk based firm, would you. :(

The problem is not at your computer, if you study the page source you will see that the Chinese characters have been encoded into the Ebuyer page and so it is they that are displaying it wrong and not you.

<td>Expansion Slot(s)</td><td>1 processor - LGA775 Socket ¦ 4 memory ( 1.8 V ) - DIMM 240-pin ¦ 1 PCI Express x16 ( x4 mode ) ¦ 1 PCI Express x1 ¦ 2 PCI</td>

No idea where they copied that spec from though, as all the Giga-byte sites (http://www.giga-byte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=2878) have perfect English versions of it

Who knows with eBuyer. They're track record is that great when it comes to plagiarism. ;)

This has been a problem since FF went up to v3.

Some XP folks have suggested that it can be solved by going to Control Panel>Regional and Language Options and selecting the Advanced tab to choose which language fonts you want to load on startup.  I tried this method long before FF3 but dumped it fairly soon after because it increased XP's running processes.

I often get this glitch on UK based websites with really basic things like the pound or dollar symbol.

Thanks, Drummer - it's only since FF3 that I've noticed the issue, and I wonder how they used to handle it.
