Tried again this morning, it downloads OK, makes a restore point but fails with install. I really don't know what to do about this.

You can contact Microsoft free of charge when there's an issue with updates, Noreen. Perhaps that would be your best course of action now?

How about uninstalling and reinstalling .NET Framework complete? I'm sure the latest version would include the rogue update, which should clear it from Windows Updates.
Uninstalling the .Net framework might be worth a try, if you don't think you need it.

Not a bad idea - uninstall and reinstall and hopefully it'll work.
I would reboot in between uninstalling and reinstalling

I've got this update sat there waiting to install and at the moment I am reluctant to let it do the business because I don't know what it does or what else it affects.
I do know that it is used by ATI Catalyst Control Centre which I do have. I am wondering if it will leave me having to then go away and update this and my ATI drivers to the latest version as well??
As an engineer I adhere to the notion that "if it aint broke, dont fix it" !
I presume the bootstrapper version downloads the bits it thinks you need???
I have ATI Catalyst as well, Sparky, but the update caused me no problems. Like you, I'm usually inclined towards if it ain't broke, but on this occasion, security won. ;)

IMPORTANT: After installing the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 package (either the bootstrapper or the full package) you should immediately install the update KB959209 to address a set of known application compatibility issues.
Curiously, I went back and it said there was nothing to update - so it may have already been done, I guess.

I installed it about a week ago on my XP machine and my Windows Home Server with no ill effects, and I use Catalyst Control centre on the XP machine.
I know this is slightly off topic, but what version of ATI drivers and CCC are you guys running?
I seem to have driver version 8.530.0.0 and a CCC of 2008.0820.2135.36847.
And it refers to a Microsoft.Net Framework Version of 2.0.50727.1434.
I thought that Vista (sorry, yes I'm using Vista!) came with version 3 anyway, or is the version that CCC shows the one that it was built with?
I also see that ATI issued version 9.1 drivers and CCC last week.

OK...........I went for it and installed the update....
It was a bit scary, it took a long time to re-boot after the install!!
But I'm back now, so it must of worked for me. It didn't appear to install any further updates either and ATI CCC still reports the same versions of everything, so they must only refer to the ATI build.

I've sent off the Support request to MS, it said that I should receive an email reply within 8 hours. I had to give details of the problem with contact email address and phone no. I then had to download a small item that gave them details of my computer. Now we shall see, I said that I didn't want a highly technical reply. ;D

One thing that did concern me slightly, it said that I should make sure that the MS email isn't treated as spam, is that likely? I've used one of my Idnet addresses.
I've not had it happen, Noreen, and I get quite a few from them. I think it's just a precaution for the 'heavy' spam filters.
It seems that it will be OK as I've just received an automated notification of receipt from Microsoft. ;D

Ironically, I bet Hotmail's the only email service that treats Microsoft emails as spam. :P

Hi Noreen that service pack installed fine on my vista laptop, it is also availabe as a separate download from the Microsoft site. Some times the download directory becomes corrupt, boot into safe mode and delete files and folders on C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download Its OK to delete the items in the Download folder, but NOT the download
folder itself. Then boot back into windows and run windows update, you will loose the history of your updates but this generally solves the issue of updates not being installed in both Vista and in XP :thumb:

I have had this issue a few times in XP and in Vista, Rik, so I know it generally works, also stopping windows defender or your av sometimes helps when updating, but hopefully that work around should sort things out :fingers:

Thanks to those with helpful tips however having asked Microsoft for help I think that I'll wait a little longer. My problem was classed as "Severity Rating: Your severity rating is: Severity C (Minimum business impact)".
It doesn't seem to be an urgent patch for most people. I'd certainly wait, then ignore MS and do what people say here. ;)

One option that's not been mentioned I don't think is to do a manual installation of the above following a clean boot. Instructions for a clean boot are here (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796). (Its the correct link or was 5 mins ago I cant get through to MS support at the moment)

So now I'm considering Gary's idea. Why do I need to boot into Safe Mode and how do I do it?
Safe mode only loads a subset of drivers, beyond that I'm not sure. In XP, you hit f8 during the boot process and that will bring up a boot menu.

No, I have automatic daily Restore Points turned off and I have a validated TI full backup from the start of this month so I'll just make a Restore Point. Thanks, I'll try it now but I've got the feeling that it still won't install. :fingers:

Well, the Safe Mode idea didn't work. I got into it OK and found the folders and files in the Download folder but couldn't find any way to delete them. I tried the usual right click method but I was just stuck with the hour glass symbol. I tried C,A,D and got into Task Manager where it said that program was not responding. When I had rebooted into normal Windows my "gadgets" bar and the lower tool bar were messed up so did a System Restore. Perhaps I was doing something wrong in trying to delete that way but didn't know any other way. Is there any reason why I can't delete these folders and files normally?
Right click on one of them and check the proerties, Noreen. They may be protected.
Couldn't see anything about being protected, Rik, so I've just deleted one of the folders.
That can't leave you any worse off than before you tried to install the patch. I hope. ;)
I've deleted all the folders and files in the Download folder although they are still in the Recycle Bin. Now going to try the Update. :fingers:

Failed again with same error message. Dowloads OK but fails just before the end of the installation. Fed up with this. :mad:
It might be better to download the file and then try to run it locally, Noreen. At least that way it doesn't use 250MB every time. :(

I know this doesn't help you, Noreen, but just for info... Last night, I had to format a Vista laptop. I installed Vista with SP1 integrated, ran Windows Update, and this update installed with no problems.
I've done quite a lot of online checking about this problem and there seems to be a minority of people who can't install this update and quite a lot who haven't been able to install previous updates for this item. Also it's been stated that probably nothing very terrible will happen if it isn't installed.

I don't think it fixes any vulnerabilities but reading through Microsoft notes is not for the faint hearted ;D either way you are better off than keep trying the updater its annoying when errors occur and for no apparent reason :dunno:
