it is now understood that some 9 million Windows computers are infected with the Win32/Conficker Worm (http://blogs.technet.com/mmpc/archive/2009/01/13/msrt-released-today-addressing-conficker-and-banload.aspx), Microsoft have released a Malicious Software Removal Tool (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en) and though most of use are probably already patched against the worm, it can do no harm to download the Tool and confirm we are not infected.

I believe that the Malicious Software Removal Tool is downloaded via Windows Update monthly, and run upon boot in the background.
