My connection has been terrible today, dropping, and on a go slow, must say it's blowing a gale and raining up here...................... I was connected to a site web page, and when I clicked to go to another page to follow a thread (on the same site) I got the no connection box on the screen. (Firefox 3) :bawl:
I opened IE (which I rarely use) and did a 'Diagnose connection problems' and it concluded that there was a problem with some ports, HTTPS and some others, I didn't make a note of them, so apologies for my vagueness  But the strange thing is, it wouldn't connect until I un-ticked the 'Stealth Mode' and the 'Block Ping' options in the 2700HGV's firewall settings. :dunno: The system was showing connected and the internet light was on, and I could receive email (didn't try sending). After un-ticking those boxes my connection speed went up :eek4: and everything appears to be OK  It's been OK since I did this, any suggestions? And will it do any harm to leave it like this, I do run Comodo free firewall and Avast AV as well :thumb:
Odd one, Mick. I'm guessing that the router re-synced when you changed the firewall settings - have you checked the logs. Stealth/Block ping shouldn't have any effect on speed, unless there's a weird interaction with Comodo. Have you tried disabling the latter?
Yes, that was my first port of call, totally disabled Comodo but no change, I then went into the routers firewall settings and and had a tinker in there. I have just upped the security level in Comodo just in case :thumb:
I've just re-checked the tick boxes, to stealth mode and block ping, everything is OK :eek4: Speed is still up as well :dunno:
I'm wondering if you've got a dodgy 2700? There's a few of them about.
It's a possibility, or maybe the router just got confused during a dropped connection?
I am going to try my old router, that should give me a indication of what's happening :thumb:
Keep us posted, Mick. Your line does sound dreadfully unstable though. :(
You are right Rik, I think it's starting to make me a bit unstable as well :eek4:
Just tested my speed again, before I disconnect things, hmmmmmmmmmm :bawl: http://www.speedtest.net/result/387772880.png
I'll post back in a bit :thumb:
Ouch. Looks like you have a 350k profile. :(
Got the old Dynamode up and working now :thumb: http://www.speedtest.net/result/387778791.png this is the first test with it. I will need to keep it connected for a day or so, and monitor it's performance
Right, back with the 2700  The Dynamode was just as bad,if not worse, so it's probably down to the BT line/exchange?
I think it's your line, Mick. Ask support to test it.
I'll ring them in the morning Rik :thumb: It's still very wet and windy up here today, and due to the terrain, the wires are cracking like whips today :eek4: I'm off up to my shed to have a tamper
Nothing like a quiet tamper in the shed, Mick. :)
Yep, I think this is definitely one for IDNet to have a look at.
If anyone is interested, you can see the stats from speedtest.net here http://www.speedtest.net/results.php
And this was the result of the last BT test
5/ Test at1.30pm 0n 11/1/09
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 1120 kbps (DOWN-STREAM), 448 kbps (UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 102 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or web sites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
I think someone forgot to wind the exchange up for the weekend :thumb:
That's a classic line instability problem, Mick. Your speed has recovered but the profile hasn't. :(

Is there any hope Rik? Or is it something I will have to live with, like haemorrhoids :eek4:
You shouldn't have to live with it, Mick. Something is causing instability, and if you've tried the test socket for a good few days, it has to be a line issue, in which case IDNet will need to raise it with BT.
It's not quite like haemorrhoids, Mick, but there are similarities, both being a pain... ;)
It's worth seeing what support make of the line. It's possible that there's an identifiable fault which can be fixed - the stats certainly suggest that.
I got in touch with support yesterday (Brian) and tried a couple of things, different filters, the line with everything except the phone disconnected (it was very noisy, loud crackles, did the 17070 quiet line) and he has raised the issue with BT :thumb: So hopefully things are moving as I type. :fingers: I have reverted back to my other router for the time being, (Dynamode) as I don't want to disturb what little service I have :bawl:
I did a BT test a earlier, the results are a bit poor :eek4: And it's hard work loading sites with pictures, a bit like the good old days! :comp:

That looks like a very sick line, Mick. :(
At there's a reasonably clear fault. In fixing the voice fault, it'll hopefully fix the broadband fault. :fingers:
Optimist. ;D
Yeah, it is BT actually... :o
You see... We'll have you thinking like a proper cynic in no time. ;D
Well I'm optimistic :thumb: I have had good results up here for long periods of time, (a good 2.5meg for months on end) I count this as a blip, albeit a large one :eek4: The fog has now lifted, maybe that's a good sign, the fog on the line is all mine, all mine............
Thinking about the analogy between haemorrhoids and a faulty BT phoneline. At least haemorrhoids can be cured in relatively short period of time, no one needs to come to your home and inspect them,no charge is made if the diagnosis is incorrect, they are unlikely to recur again and no permanent movement of residence is required.
I think I'd rather have the haemorrhoids.

That's reassuring Steve :eek4:
Of course, in the short term... :o
A favourite saying of mine is 'I'd rather walk round town with a nail in my boot' :thumb:
Neither option being particularly appetising. ;)
The nice man from BT came today, and found a fault on the line about 275 metres down the road. in the trees :eek4: (the phone was that bad this morning I couldn't have a conversation, the noise was terrible :thumbd:)
Anyhow, he tested and prodded and fixed :thumb: Things are looking better ( :fingers: ) and I have seen speeds that I didn't know existed up here :eek4: So a big thank you to IDNet and Brian for sorting me out :karma:
This was a test not so long ago :ok:

I know it's early days, and things need to settle down, (including me) but it's another result :solved:
Now that is an improvement, Mick. :thumb:
Excellent, Mick. ;D
Good news, Mick. :)
A result !
Now see what that 2700 can really achieve
It will be great to see just how good a 2700HGV can be. I have been using mine for some time and just can't fault it and when you take into account I live about two mile from the exchange. ;D

Just managed this :eek4:
