Title: NTP server
Post by: Ted on Jan 01, 2009, 11:45:04
A very good morning and a happy new year to all. :)

Do IDnet have their own NTP server? i seem to remember reading something about it a while back, can't find any reference to it so i could be mistaken.

Oh well, i'll have to try and break something else.  ;D

Just tinkering about under the hood, as you do.

I've got a list of those I use, if it's any help, Ted.

I use NIST (http://tf.nist.gov/tf-cgi/servers.cgi).

At the moment i'm using europe.pool.ntp.org which seems fine, always spot on. I was looking on the Greenwich site and it would appear they don't actually have their own Server either, which i find odd. Perhaps it would get overloaded at this time of year.

No real reason to change, like i say, just fiddling, tweaking and updating media sources and packages and so on. Seemed like a good idea for a new year's morning\afternoon.

This might be of interest, Ted. It's the NPL rather than Greenwich which looks after the signal.

Perhaps a suggestion to idnet to set up a server to do ntp might be an idea?

Now lets be honest it does not have to be a swanky accurate to one millionth of a second (level 1 stratum i belive).

just a single point of referance, im sure it would not only prove usefull to us but them as well for syncing up all the servers, routers etc.

And cut network traffic (and latency for us lot(and therfore accuracy)).

9 times out of 10 the problems i have when trying to determine a fault is where a server is not synced to anything, we now sync all servers routers voip gateways etc on site to just 1(usually one of the domain controllers-and sync that to a proper internet time source) that way at least we have a fixed referance and all servers etc have the same time.

Just a thought

Drop support an email and suggest it, Dean, the more people who ask, the more likely it is to happen.

I use NTP pool project also (It is mentioned earlier in this thread) but wanted to add that there are also 4 UK servers rather than 'europe' - although the Europe ones will probably redirect to the lowest latency NTP server available.

Indeed. :)

0.uk.pool.ntp.org
1.uk.pool.ntp.org
2.uk.pool.ntp.org
3.uk.pool.ntp.org
