Title: S.O.S!! - (Speed)
Post by: AvengerUK on Jan 19, 2007, 15:37:31
Well, 5 minutes ago my lights flickered once or twice, before that, internet was at full speed. Straight after, im crawling along at a stunning 50kbs...occasionally reaching 400kbs. Before i was at 1600kbs! - i didnt resync at first, (then i did to try and fix it) but no luck so far!

Am i right in assuming this "flicker" had something to do with it? - just hope it hasent messed my profile up, as that takes ages to sort!

I'd guess so.  My own router drops power when the lights dip, even if it's not enough to drop the PC, so that would be my guess.

Did it actually sync at a lower speed?  If not, then that's OK, regardless of actual speeds.
If so, you will need to keep a higher sync for 3 days to get your profile back up.

provided it's not gone below one of the barriers and dropped your profile 500k, you should be OK.  If it didn't sync lower at any time between the problem starting and now.
Rik did a post with all the Profiles and related sync speeds somewhere on here.

Thank goodness for that, I was getting worried for you.

Do you have surge protector?

I read somewhere that they have a smoothing effect on power dips / spikes.

Yep - both for power and ADSL.

Well I don't think my local exchange has :o Yesterday in the storm at least two people i know had a total loss of sync with the same exchange at exactly the same time. Only way to get it back was by disconnecting both phone line and power from the router and then plugging in again. Well I suppose yesterday was a special case, I was only worried about my profile changing as I was in day 9 of max training and it's only dropped below 8128 for about half an hour so far.

Sometimes, the loss of sync is caused by mains spikes radiating interference as cables are affected by the weather. ADSL can be very sensitive to weather, even to high temperatures.
