Thanks So. Given it a try, it will play music from my whs share but it all goes pear shaped with the itunes library stored in the same place.

Edit: I looked in the Songbird error console and discovered that it was looking in the wrong place for the files, which I thought was strange since iTunes was playing ok.It appeared that the itunes library had not updated a change of directory name I made some time ago, so having changed back to the old directory name the library import to Songbird now plays and so does iTunes. It a bit disappointing but perhaps not surprising that despite many hours waiting for library rebuilds with itunes allowing  consolidation of my music library into one location that it makes a fundamental error of keeping an old location in the file.

I have heard of some people having issues due to itunes etc. I presume they will be sorting it out. I don't use itunes, which is a good thing ;)
