Title: The loss of connection
Post by: Rik on Nov 07, 2008, 17:05:51
The loss of connection at around 16:08 today was caused by one of the centrals going down. IDNet are waiting for information from BT on what caused it.

While it was down, IDNet took the opportunity to deal with the router maintenance, planned for tomorrow, hence some of us saw short breaks in service as the routers re-booted, others on the affected central saw a longer break.

Good work by IDNet, which hopefully saved any further outages.  :thumb:

Was Idnet having troubles on Thurs ? I ask because my download speed and upload speed was at the dial up rate, I didn't report it because it came back to normal after a couple of hours and has been OK since, I only ask in-case it's the start of a problem on my system something to look out for.

I'm not aware of any issues, Bob, but if you drop support an email, they can test your line and get information from BT about any capacity issues at your exchange.

This was my speeds on Thursday.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 6592 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 5500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 968 kbps

Contacted IDNet and got a phone call back from Miriam I think it was saying they were aware of a problem so not just you. Why has the status page not changed all weekend? I'd rather them spend the time fixing the problem but is there any point in having it if it's not used.

Everything is running normally now.

My best guess is that it's a handful of people being affected so that they are unable to say anything meaningful. My speeds are normal, I've had no connection drops since 17:00 yesterday.

I've lost a day!!! I just watched Arsnl v Man U :( and could have sworn it was a Sunday. lol.  Guess that's the price you pay for starting your week end on a Thursday.

I would have thought the drop outs and no connection issues that have affected quite a few people by the looks would have warranted a status change though.

The main period of trouble ran from 16:08 - 16:44 yesterday, during which time I was getting information from IDNet and keeping the forum updated. They had to decide whether to put all hands to fixing the problem and, while there was downtime anyway, carrying out the router maintenance that was due for this morning, and that's what they opted to do.

There seems to have been a further outage last night around 11:30, it didn't affect all customers but did affect customers with other ISPs, so I'm guessing that it's a BT issue which there's been no information about as yet.

With IDNet's support hours, there is always going to be an issue of the availability of information 'out of hours'. We do our best to find out what's happening with an ongoing issue, but for a historical issue I tend not to bother people in their time off. Simon has, however, spoken to James at IDNet this morning, and they were trying to get information on last night's problems, but we've heard nothing since.

Simon and the gang do have a family life and have to spend time with them at times.  Like the rest of the working population everyone is entitled to time away from work.  I applaud  them all for their dedication and hard work and hope they have a nice restful weekend..except for the ones with children. >:D  :eek4: :thumb:
