Title: security suites = hacked via apps
Post by: somanyholes on Nov 06, 2008, 09:46:45
Hey all

Might be of interest. A paper released by secunia showing how poorly security suites perform against application bugs. Another good reason to use secunia psi......

A worrying read, So, especially as those who rely on these suites are probably not going to be that knowledgeable. :(

I can't read the article at the moment, but you do tend to find that articles of this nature, are more or less an advert for the author's company product.

I use a security suite, and haven't had a virus for years.

it's certainly in their intertests i won't deny that. However as psi is free for home use it's a good thing.

As far thinking i haven't had a virus for a while, well looking at the detection rates for some of the code they have tested it's not surprising that things haven't been picked up ................

That's a big problem, isn't it, So? We think we are protected, we rely on our chosen app to protect us, so if it fails we are not only vulnerable but ignorant of our vulnerability.

Nail on head there rik.

It used to be the case that when you got a virus you knew about it. It would either do something malicious or invasive and you would know something was up. Not to say invasive ones don't occur now but £ is being made now, and the underground don't want you to know that your infected, which makes it harder for joe bloggs to know what is going on.

Sadly true, So. If multiple security apps could cohabit, we might stand a better chance.
