:o :o :o :o :o :o
yes.......dont believe it myself but had a drop yesterday for about 5 mins at around 3.00pm ish.
anyone else ???
I've seen a handful of reports, ge Noreen yesterday, Baz, and have experienced it myself (though not today). In my case it was BT engineers just up the road and improved my line stats, so I can live with it. :)
yeah me too was surprised thats all. didnt want to kick up a fuss me been a newbie ;) just wondered if it was my side or not.
If a router drops sync, Baz, it's always something to do with the exchange, the cable to you or your own setup. If the PPP session drops, but not sync, then it may be an IDNet issue.
Looks like I've had a disconection today, as well my WAN uptime is only showing 3 hrs. 27 mins. ???
BT is having a go at everyone then. :)

Could be, Rik, BT have had a box attached to one of their poles just down the road from me for several weeks, presumably monitoring something, I've noticed this afternoon it's been removed.
They've been monitoring your connection with Phorm then. ;)
My connection dropped for 5 mins around noon
Steve
Nothing showing here. ???
just checked the router log and got this

I have been on all day....nothing here ???
I lost ppp at just past noon too. I didn't notice it but it says so in the log.
LCP (momentarily) down here @ 13:53 GMT. (Sounds almost like an electronic Mexican wave travelling through the BT network to me.)
 brilliant description ;D
Connection is dropping quite a bit today and over the past few days.
SNR Margin
:7.0 15.0 db
Line Attenuation
:44.5 31.0 db
Stats seem decent to me (the untrained eye).
Any chance this is down to IDnet?
Thanks,
ron
Similar to Ann in that mine dropped for 15 seconds today at noon, but I only know because I checked my logs (after reading this thread).

If it's the PPP session dropping, then it will probably be outside of IDNet's network, though not for certain. If it's your sync dropping, this won't be to do with IDNet.

That's a sync loss, Baz. Local noise, work at the exchange or on the cables.
thanks Rik. will keep an eye on it :thumb:
Losing both ADSL & PPP.
So that's not IDnet? Then who can point the finger at because I really need someone to blame for this. It needs to get fixed. My line stats don't appear to be that bad. I had a BT engineer out a few month back that pretty much ruled out any problems with my house and installed a new faceplate for the phone line.

Have you contacted IDNet? That would be the best thing to do, so they can help you directly.

If you lose sync, you'll lose PPP as a result. This won't be down to IDNet.
It could be a line problem or equipment. Have you tried your router in the test socket?
It's not a problem in my house. I had a BT technician out a few months back testing everything out. New telephone socket faceplate etc. Has to be a line problem but this has been going on a while for me. If IDnet don't sort it out then who does?
Well, that's the problem, this is one for BT, but if they don't find a fault (which is likely) they'll charge you.
My advice would be to contact BT faults and tell them that you get intermittent crosstalk (important that it's "intermittent" because it won't necessarily be there when the engineer comes round ;)). BT's fix for this seems to be to swap you to a new pair, which can sometimes cure ADSL problems.
Hi
Okay, my connection has been dropping a few times over the last few weeks. I put it down to a blip, and didn't want to cause a fuss, but tonight it's dropped twice already in the last five minutes! This always scares the hell out of me when I get that dreaded "Internet Explorer cannot display page...." blah, blah, blah, because that used to be a common factor with my previous ISP - not that I'm mentioning names (you know, the one that's a very bright, sickly amberish colour with a Bangladeshi call centre). I don't think I could cope experiencing all that again!
Now, I know I'm going to be asked to post my router stats, but I'm ashamed to say I haven't a clue how to do this :-[. I'd be really grateful if someone could explain to me how to do this?!
I don't know whether I should be concerned or not. Usually it's such a stable connection, but just recently, I too have noticed drops. I've been logging off and then restarting when this happens, and it has previously then corrected itself. I'm reluctant to keep unplugging the modem lead, in case it cocks it up even more so!
I'm off to bed now, but will check back tomorrow to see if anyone is able to offer advice.
Many thanks all!!
Moonshine.
I also lost internet connection for a couple of minutes at about 22.15, My dsl connection stayed though.
Maybe just part of that electronic mexican wave. ;D
Just checked my router logs and my connection went down at 22:06 and didn't come back until 22:35, are BT messing about again? ???
I also lost PPP a little while ago.
Maybe our dodgy router is playing up again, which would explain ppp drops but not at all related to the adsl drops some people are reporting. I'm on my phone so can't check my router logs.
That's 3 drops in 2 days now. BT must be replacing the hamsters at my exchange.
The worrying thing is, what with!?
Mine went again too. 22:06 but just for a minute.
mine also went down at a crucial point in Cod4 lol only 5 mins or so. :-\

Hi
Down here again last night at 22:06 for a couple of mins
Steve
No drop here. I've had a word with support and they are checking their logs, but nothing was obvious when we spoke.
So did mine a couple of times between 22.00 and 22.30 - reset router and it was ok
I had one too...

Only noticed it because I got a reconnect to the IM session I was on at the time.
That's a loss of sync, Pete, definitely an issue between you and the exchange, nothing to do with IDNet.
I wonder if some routers/modems drop synch when the ppp goes while others are more stable and keep synch. The fact that petethegeek above dropped at 22:06 which is the exact time that others of us lost ppp is perhaps significant and not quite as simple as it seems.
I've had a Netgear which didn't drop sync if PPP went down, Ann, hence my comment.
There's no reason that a router should lose sync is the PPP session is dropped.

Mine definitely lost ppp and lcp and it took 29 minutes to reconnect, although I didn't know about till after the event as I wasn't at the PC when it happened.
That could be unrelated, though, Ray.
I've just had a chat with Simon, they've found a bug in the Cisco router software which is causing this problem. It will be patched in the next day or so.

Agreed, Rik, BT are my favourite suspects at the moment. :-\
See above, Ray. IDNet have identified the cause.
I don't think Pete's drop was BT at all. I think his router just flipped and lost lcp when the ppp went. The timing is just too coincidental.
People here are often far too quick to blame BT and let IDNet off the hook. It doesn't help sort the problem. As we have seen here IDNet now know they have a problem but had it been left to some to downplay it, it wouldn't have got sorted at all.
Some of us raised it with IDNet to get it looked at, Ann. ;)

Oops missed that post, to quick on the reply button again, :) anyway that's good to know, Rik, another problem soon to be solved. :thumb:
Some people are also very quick to blame IDNet for everything, Ann, when it's not always something they can control.

Point taken. I guess that when it comes to sync, it is seen as something outside of IDNet's control, that's all. :)
Glad to see it wasn't just me, then!! :)
blimey I started something here didnt I  ;)
Don't you always, Baz?  ;D

first you try to tempt me here with amazing stats and praise then you want rid :'( :'( :'( ;) ;)
Far be it from me to deprive IDNet of a good paying customer! (http://si6776.www.idnet.com/smileys/grin.gif)
Obviously it's all Cisco's fault.
if (std::rand() % 100 + 1 == 1) { _this->connection->drop("bye!"); }
 Tsk, tsk.
That one's gone straight over my head. :P
You shouldn't have ducked then, Seb. ;D
I thought I must be going wrong somewhere. ;)
I understand but a little of this technology, but I think that the Link Control Protocol establishes, configures and monitors the PPP link and if an LCP packet determines that the link is not functioning properly, it terminates it. Loss of sync will always cause termination but termination is not always caused by loss of sync. All my Netgear router logs is LCP down, not the cause. It is not true to say this is always a BT line problem, but I guess it almost always is. Any point along the connection can give rise to the failure, including both BT and IDNET equipment. Since many of us saw termination at the same time loss of sync was an unlikely cause. As it turns out a robust dialogue on this thread and Rik's follow up helped diagnose an IDNET problem. I do not expect a trouble-free service and I suggest most of the time connection issues are not IDNET's fault. To the Companies credit they investigated the problem and put their hand up. That is good enough for me.
IDNet are good like that; they do tend to admit when there is something wrong at their end. :)
Older Netgears used to log the PPP drop separately, Dave, it's a shame that they dropped that functionality. I agree with you that LCP can go down in response to a PPP problem, but 99% (it's as valid as any stat ;)) of dropped connections are a local/BT issue. That this one wasn't is unusual, but as you say, once IDNet were aware of it, they found the cause pretty quickly. :thumb:
