Simple question,it concerns my Acer pc I bought a few months ago and Im more than happy with.up to now I have used my former monitor, its about 16 months old.
I have been looking at monitors today and (staying within a budget) I have narrowed it down to an HP or Acer..19" widescreen.I noted today that they all state Vista compatible.so Im am wondering if the new one whichever it is will improve my picture.
I have also found one on Flea bay which may be worth a punt as its very close to me This ine is an HP 22" and I see that it has software.
The question as I have never had a monitior which requires software
And an answer we all ask at one time....but this concerns monitors (Does Size Matter) I though smaller meant chrisper picture ?
;D Thank you. There is no rush but they are open until 9pm tonight ;)
Hi David
All monitors come with (or should do) drivers. In addition, some monitors install extra software to let you play with settings or to handle rotation of the screen.
Smaller doesn't necessarily mean crisper, a good large monitor with high resolution (my Eizo 24" is 1920x1200) is just as crisp as a small monitor offering a 1024 or 1280 resolution. Quality varies between brands, of course. The HPs I have seen have looked pretty good, and you will appreciate the extra real estate that a larger screen gives you. :)

Hp2207 HD 22"....
This is my short list so far The Ebay is the HP 2207
The Acer looks better on paper, David, but you need to look at one ideally, check things like the viewable angle and glare. If it uses a DVI connection, it should be perfectly crisp.
Thanks Rik for such speed,I did not realise,if this is the case that quality could be compromised for example if you use a non Vista mention monitor ?
The Acer monitor to be honest looks the same design but reading a lot of reviews apparently they have a low humming sound which reviewers have found annoying.
I did read as many reviews before buying now the only considerationg here is in genereal I find that happy people dont always bother to write a review, but disgruntled ones will so its a balancing act...
I have viewed the HP and the picture quality is very good indeed and makes the other machines look wishy washy, but I did not know if the other machines had different graphics cards as they were different pc bases its difficult to judge..if that is clear ?but The Hp certainly was very good
I was just wondering what size and shape you are using at the moment ? Also which Acer is it? i.e has it the ability to run a bigger screen at high resolution
David, I am no expert on Monitors, however my neighbour has recently purchased a HP 19" WS Monitor, I am well impressed with it.
I just plugged a standard Illyama 17" monitor in to my Vista PC, it worked without any software.
Thanks Steve what I have at the momnet is a 19" cheap and cheerful just checked the back and there isnt even a name on it.I bough it on the quick in my (wet behind the ears day)so can only be an improvemnet.
The Acer was the X223

I suspect the only limitation with Vista is the availability of specific drivers, David. Without them, you could fall back on Vista's native drivers.

Its subjective I know, but two heads are better than one ;)
Take a look at this David, great spec for the money, includes free 5 day delivery as well, 3 years on site warranty.

What shape is the old one? As screen size is measured diagonally going from 19" old format to Widesreen you'll need a jump in size or you will loose picture height.

Thats cleared it up a little for me thanks Rik,I have only just (to be honest)just picked one up and not giving it anywhere near enough importance...still its all a learning curve
I echo what Steve says, David. If you go widescreen, you need a bigger size to get the most out of it. Check the native resolution, you want nothing less than 1050 vertically, imo.

Thanks Rik I will double check but The HP I think is 1680
That sounds like a horizontal resolution to me...
Wendy called that out (I was multitasking badly) 900 is the correct answer

Sorry Steve....Aspire L320
Personally, I like a bit more, David - as I said, I work at 1920x1200, which really does give you room to move in. I can have email open on one side of the screen with the browser on the other, for example, and full screen photo processing is a delight.
The 20" HP is 1680x1050 so this would meet the minimum required so if I get the HP it would need to be 20" ?
In my view (pun intended :)), yes. ;)
Vista prefers HDCP compliant monitors, like the new sky HD boxes like as well (Sky Pace HD boxes at last) if you do not have a HDCP monitor you could come across issues with certain HD formats causing your monitor to simply go black, as Vista requires the DHCP handshake
:tmi: Gary, don't confuse things further.. ;D :out: :duck:
My final thoughts don't go less than 20in WS preferably 22in WS anything smaller you'll need eyes like slits to view it

If they are selling the "S" panel ones that's a bargain, Samsung sold three different panels for that monitor and some were quite poor, the S panel was the best, I have the CW version of that with a wide colour gamut that was only sold in S panel and its a great monitor :thumb:
I think you would be very happy with that. I have the 24in Samsung very pleased with it but it does take up a lot of room

Maybe you need to tweak the setup, David. The Eizo I use has several user-defined modes. I have a 'full on' one when working with graphics, but a softer (less bright) setting for text work.

The Eizo simply has a mode function via the front buttons. Once set up, you can step through them.

The Samsung has presets which are easy to swap around David, the menu is not really intuitive but between the Samsung owners you will be fine as to advise, I used a calibrator to set mine up, the brightness was alarming for anything except photoshop work out of the box

Set contrast to 100, then turn brightness down until the whites are comfortable on the eye, David. Contrast sets the overall gain, brightness, effectively sets the black point.

:iagree: each monitors calibrating is different even across the same model but you will lose out on deep blacks with brightness that high the same goes for LCD TV's mine has brightness pretty low but contrast at about 84 on my 32" and the blacks are rich and deep, not grey

I use the Huey, David. It's made by Gretag-McBeth, the company who make the professional units used throughout the graphics industry. I cannot praise these devices highly enough, they will give you a real WYSIWYG monitor when it comes to digital photography. The only difference between the screen and the print will be the difference between a radiated and reflected image.
I used a THX mastered DVD, i.e Star Wars
Not professional I know but I am pleased with the resulting picture.
There's nothing wrong with doing it by eye, Vit, especially if you're not calibrating for colour accuracy.
Well I had plenty of practice Rik, I used to work for Samsung Electronics in the PC Monitor Division lol.
That would certainly help. :)

No doubt about it, David, it's an excellent Monitor. :thumb:
One bonus will be that you wont have to screw your eyes up as much to look at the websites displaying pictures ;) ;) :out:
So True.......wonder how many people put as much into choosing a monitor when buying though?ok most buy the package but many do as I have done get the base unit ,then pick a monitor.in my case without even learning the basics of either the pc or monitor and the speed that this technology changes its easy to overlook these things.....in my case overclock (took my time there, didnt want any spelling errors ;)
A good monitor is vital if you spend any amount of time at the PC. A bit like a good mouse and keyboard.
Strongly agree with what Rik said.
I have learned a lot over the past year, wish I had armed myself with all of this before I even thought of switching on let alone buying one
OTOH, until you start using one, David, you aren't in touch with other people's experience and advice. We all have to make a few mistakes along the way. :)
Thats how I have viewed it all,the best way to learn is by experience, mistakes are a must or you will have learned nothing.
Hence the posting.I thought Im going to get a monitor, had walked the shops looked on the net, even marked some off,but would do nothing before finding out from people I trust who have all been here and may be able to steer me in the right direction,(with a few added laughs) and it proved the right choice
I had one in mind.and without posting would have bought it.
In the event I did not get that one.but I learned how and when to calibrate, what the numbers meant on the screen a good level of resolution....none of this would be possible standing in PC world looking at a box and hoping I picked the correct Monitor.....I did choose the right one,had a few laughs, saved some money and learned a load...................Priceless ;)
We accept Mastercard, David. ;)

Well according to Overclockers the monitor left them on Friday to citylink, and should have been here today.I have waited all day and checked and checked, come home from the school run, ensuring someone is here and get back, check the site again and it shows my monitor has been scanned and is on route to delivery "Branch" and that delivery date is now tomorrow.strange how it got on the system while I was out
Not too bothered about waiting until tomorrow little dissappointed that they have not delivered when they said they would....at least I can track it now and assume it will come down from Cheshire overnight and be with me tomorow.
Its no big deal but I would have preferred not to have recieved their Email to say my item had been despatched and giving a delivery date....not to worry. :shake:
it might be there site catching up and you still might get it today.
Sounds like the supplier didn't send it to Shittylink David, if it is only now on it's way to delivery branch.
Overclocker's is off of my shopping list. :rant2:

Its possible Paul.Im not too fussed to be honest Im relieved I have managed to get some data on it as with other companies I have tracked items from being scanned, loaded on van etc...I have seen this "catch up before"but at least I know the latest will be tomorrow and there is always this possiblity when ordering late Friday so I cant be too hard them to be fair

I am usually grinding my teeth by this point too, In. :(

Citylink's tracking system isn't always accurate.
I was tracking a parcel I ordered via Amazon and the Citylink site said it was delivered to Swansea and was loaded on a van for delivery. Thankfully the parcel turned up that day and the driver didn't have to drive all the way from Wales!
That was lucky think of all that wool ;D ;D
Not to mention mint sauce... ;D

David you are far too kind with suppliers, eBuyer you can order up until 8.00pm for next day delivery, so they can all do it.

IIRC they can do it on Saturday too.

I will get a refund, the monitor will be here................. its not the end of the world.
Thanks for your support though...... ;)
Being philosophical. I have always thought Monday was a poor day for setting up a monitor. Much better to do it on a Tuesday. In defence of Overclockers if you read their terms and conditions, 16.30 is given as the cut off point for next day delivery
I stll think its a good service Steve,I did say this. I did ordered and paid for it late afternoon so really was surprised at the prospect of getting it this morning.I have not read the T&Cs but as I said earlier Im sure it will be here tomorrow and if I had ordered it at 1pm on Friday I expect it would be here now
Im still happy to get my bargain and I have tomorrow to look foward to..setting it up.
Now its on the van ;D :thumb: my guess is around 11 ;D
No it just arrived 08.30 :thumb: :thumb:
Glad to here it David :thumb: by the way you dont really need to use the Samsung driver CD your graphics card should be fine without it, if you use photoshop the Samsung driver is corrupt anyway ;D enjoy
Thanks Gary, have the school run first then will unpack when I get back at around 9.15....I dont use photoshop on this machine ;D
Good news, David. :thumb:
Thanks Ray.....the box isnt rattling but I will check it out when I get back  :fingers:
I'm very surprised at this, I've ordered loads of components from Overclockers and every time it has been delivered on the day / specified time. The delivery service is usually spot on.
Glad you got the monitor though David, take some pics please :)
I might be in the market for a new one soon
Will do Vitriol.its very impressive and I have only opened the box.just reading up on the bits and bobs looks straight foward enough.I note is heavy in comparison to my ther monitor and all leads are included DVI ......I somehow think I may be in for a pleasant surprise when I see the quality :fingers:
Can anyone answer,Do I neee to connect both Dvi and the signal sub cable?
Dvi white
sig sc Blue
Do I need to connet both? or just the one....instructions dont state ?
Just the white one I think, David.
Thanks Simon :thumb:
Only one is needed, David. You could connect both and switch between them to see which looks better, but as that will be the DVI, it's not worth it. ;)
Thanks for that,I think we are ready to go,would I install drivers befrore switching over.?
You won't need to, Windows will be able to run the monitor with a native driver. You may want to try the Samsung one, or stay with the native version. Was it Gary who said the Samsung one was buggy?
Yes Rik I think that was with photoshop though
I knew I'd read something about it... Sounds like Adobe may have been cheating again then. :(
Well Im back on and this is huge.bright, clear and everything looks so different...its amazing the quaility the style I am blown away with it............................. :great: :great:
Will have to configure it now.
My other monitor flickered and the picture unstable sometimes this has solved the problem as well :thumb:
Great stuff, David! :thumb:
Was the other monitor connected on the D-sub (blue cable), David? DVI alone improves picture quality massively. Glad you like it. :thumb:
Yes it was Rik but this has instantly remedied it,I did think there was a fault,
Everything is so large clear and bright I am amazed its a brilliant monitor and Im so pleased I chose Samsung.
I have looked into the menu and see that it is set at 95 contrast with 75 brightness,so will try out the 35 you mentioned on the earlier posts, cant wait to see what my photos look like.
I'd leave it at the default values for a while, David, and see how you get on with it.

Well Vitriol its up and running I was a little over awed with it as its like nothing I have ever had,I am so pleased with it,picture is just perfect, stable and quality is amazing and I dont use this word lightly, have not used the Samsung drivers, cant see how I could better this, its the best spend for a long while and as this pc is new it really does it justice....if you do get a new monitor this would have to be at the top when you decide.... :thumb:
I couldnt have reached this without the help of everyone,it sure pays to listen thanks guys. :thnks:
Now about the Eizo I know you're just dying to buy, David... >:D

On another note Rik since I configured the other monitor I had no vision problems so a cautionary tale for others who may experience similar issues.it was worrying to be honest and I think I was burning my eyes staring into it at close range too.but have not had this problem since I configured it and of course that is upstairs now...but another lesson learned :thumb:
I usually give a new monitor a day or two, so that I acclimatise (and the monitor settles). After that, I'll calibrate, but the monitor needs to have been on for more than an hour when you do, never calibrate a monitor 'cold'. :)

Careful its a bigger screen....I cant hide anymore ;D
I would have thought it was big enough to hide behind, David. :)
 and risk it getting damaged.......... :eek4:
Fair point, stand in front and protect the screen. :)
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-050-SA
Just checked the overclockers site, and the price of this monitor has gone up to £179.99.double checked and its the same one, looks like I got a result ?
I got it for £147.00
Looks like you got a real bargain there David - :welldone: that man :thumb:
Nice one, David. Worth waiting a day for. :) Still pleased?
Im over the moon with this monitor the colour is brilliant, sharp.I didnt expect such a transformation with just a monitor,at a loss to know why they have gone up in price and its not a little £30 is a lot when you think about it.
I would have ended up with the HP if I had not thought to ask for some help on here in choosing  to you all ;D
A good monitor is priceless, tbh, David - it's what you spend a lot of time actually using, the rest of the hardware is just driving the screen, really. :thumb:
Odd that, because one of the sale headers is still at the old price until you click on it. I was tempted and probably will be when the price is right for me. Glad your pleased with it, all you need now is some surround sound speakers if you've not got some already.
Now now,are you related to Rik......I have just 2 and a subwoofer Steve.......I fancy that huey or whatever its called next ;)

ohh might get one for my new monitor!!
I highly recommend them, Paul. There is a Pro version, but it doesn't really add anything for the home user.
so this makes the monitor have the correct colours etc?
will it be useful for a wide gamut monitor?
Yes and yes. It puts up a series of colour targets on the screen and measures the output. From that, it can create an accurate profile which will allow 'screen to print' matching. It's not just colour, of course, it also sets up the grey scale - and the difference in that is usually very noticeable.
I think the pro monitors ambient light and adjusts accordingly????
have you bought from this site before rik?
No, I've never used them - I just Googled.

Have got a few pics as promised,is there any other way other than sizing them down as attatchments as on this machine at present have no photosuite at present ?
Upload them to your album or webspace, David?
Thanks Rik do I then just make a link to these ?

Do you have to leave it connected all the time or once its done its job can you disconnect it?
You can disconnect it, or leave it connected and it will adjust the screen for ambient light levels. As I try to control the ambient light level and quality, I tend to disconnect.
