Someone here mentioned IE8 so I thought I'd give it a go. It doesn't seem a whole lot different from IE7 to be honest but I do like the way I can shove the refresh and stop buttons over the other side. ;D
Anyway, there is also a compatibility mode button which, it says, is for sites designed for older browsers and I find that I need to hit that button for these forums. Otherwise some of the pages go a bit wonky at the bottom. So, what's wrong with the way the forum software is written and are they going to provide an update to work with IE8? And does anyone else find the same?
Ann have you got SP3? There is an issue about removing IE8 that could mean you end up stuck with it , just thought I should mention it :) IE8 looks a good catch up to FF in many ways from what I have read though.

Not to be defensive, but who's to say the forum software is faulty? It works OK with every other browser, and now IE8 comes along and decides to read things differently, everyone's supposed to jump to attention? :eyebrow: I wonder how long it will be before people start saying, 'I8IE8'. ;)
I quite like IE8.... but... I will hate it when it comes to make all our existing sites work with it..
Our sites work in IE6, IE7, FF, Opera, etc but some parts fail in IE8 and looks to be a padding/margin/width/height problems again that was in IE6..
Why can't all browsers act the same way when displaying sites :rant2:

I only meant what's wrong with it as far as IE8 is concerned. I wondered if anyone understood why the compatibility issue.
Oh and Gary, no, the problems of uninstalling shouldn't affect me as I didn't install beta 1 at all. Not that I'm considering uninstalling just yet. It seems to be good. I did install Chrome too but didn't like it for some reason so uninstalled that one.

That's ok Ann was just worried you could get stuck with it, I think the final is due out in January. I have not bothered with Chrome, its Google and the EULA says I'm signing my privacy away and even on a virtual system that's a big no out of principle, also there is a limit to how many browsers I want sitting on my desktop. The issues you see are due to IE8 and its rendering from what I have read, Microsoft are not adhering to the promise of compliance with web standards again after saying they were, have you tried the acid test with it? http://www.webstandards.org/action/acid2/

It's probably a compliance issue, Ann. We have seen it before with versions of IE. MS decides what the standard should be, instead of working to the agreed standard. :(
MS want the web their way, not the way its meant to bee seen Ann most sites are written for MS but that's changed a lot as webmasters write for standards not MS as in the bad old days so its the browser really, not the forum I would imagine and Microsoft like to pass the blame for that, its a bit like a tyre company making a tyre they think is best but rides really bumpy on roads, then saying all roads should be changed to suit the new tyre

I've been using IE8 for a couple of months now with no problems up until the last couple of days where it's hung quite regularly. If it doesn't behave itself then it's back to IE7.
I still use IE6, I am a luddite. ;D
If it works okay and your happy with it In, then I don't blame you. IE8 has hung twice since I posted above so I'll try re-installing it first.

There's nothing wrong with the forum software. It works fine, as it has always done. Instead, some tinkering programmers at the behest of a commercial operation trying to make money have written a new "improved" version of a browser that doesn't work with existing software.
Am I the only one sick to death of having new software forced on me? Shouldn't we start reversing our complaints from "such and such application doesn't work with Vista" or whatever the "improved" software is, to "This new software doesn't work with so and so", and refuse to buy or use it until it does?
Most updates now are just tinkering - the days of really substantial improvements are long gone and most apps and OSs now do pretty much all anyone wants. The general public's failure to rush to upgrade to Vista is proof that the majority are satisfied with XP.
My PC works fine. That of everyone else I know works fine too. I'll take any improvements on offer, but I don't like the fact that there seems to be an expectation amongst programmers that the end user must update. The programmers should change to suit our needs, not us change to suit theirs.

Tried Firefox some time ago but still preferred IE. Version 8 was working fine up until 2 days ago but kept crashing with increasing frequency so I've reverted back to IE7. I've also got Opera which I use very occasionally. I'll try IE 8 again when it moves into production rather than beta (though might give beta 3 a try if that comes first).

Not necessarily as most existing users may not wish to risk not being able to use their PC due to a lack of confidence in installing OS's or are not prepared to pay for the upgrade but would nonetheless want to use Vista. Also the general publicmay not be the ones to judge it by anyway as it's the indusrial users that Microsoft probably make most of their money from and they are the ones that will be encouraged to migrate to it. Having said that we have thousands of PC at work and we're still using XP but this could be because a lot of testing needs to be done to ensure that all applications still run okay and because the 3rd party maintenance company charge us more for a system build than we could buy the PC for ready built.

If you have a website and no time to make it work in IE8 or your waiting for the final version.

Think about me then, its my job to have loads of browsers.. I have IE5, 6, 7, 8, firefox 2, 3, Opera 9, Safari 3, and so more smaller less known ones on this pc.
