Title: Google Chrome is out
Post by: kinmel on Sep 02, 2008, 20:03:39

The Google Chrome download (http://www.google.co.uk/chrome/) became available a few minutes ago.

At the present time the servers are not too busy and the d/l is at your full speed.

I am off to test it

It does seem pretty fast, but I don't like the overly-basic feel.

I see El Reg (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/09/03/google_chrome_vuln/) is reporting a security issue today.

Hardly surprising, all new software cannot be 100% secure at launch.

I have uninstalled it, it lacks so many features that Firefox has but I'll be keeping an eye on it.  It will improve in time.

I don't think it is ready to be a browser for everyday use and so I have un-installed it too.

My worries about Google's data gathering habits just reinforce the need to dump it.

be sure to manually clear C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome, it retains your usage history after the un-install

http://www.gnucitizen.org/blog/google-chrome/

the info on popups looks like trouble......

also from the privacy policy http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en-GB/privacy.html?hl=en-GB&brand=CHMG&utm_source=en-GB-hpp&utm_medium=hpp&utm_campaign=en-GB

I know firefox does this which i have turned off, but i sure as hell don't want google having it. "When you type URLs or queries in the address bar, the letters that you type are sent to Google so that the Suggest feature can automatically recommend terms or URLs that you may be looking for. If you choose to share usage statistics with Google and you accept a suggested query or URL, Google Chrome will send that information to Google as well. You can disable this feature as explained here. "

Bit like the stuff that Vauxhall used to fit their 1959 Vauxhall Victors then, shiny on the top, rusty underneath. ;)

One of the interesting things is that Chrome is based on the Apple/KHTML WebKit.  As it's open source, some of the stuff will almost certainly find its way back to Safari - Mac and Windows versions.

Hopefully Apple will dump the bits that tell Google exactly what you are up to.  Google are beginning to make Phorm look like a bunch of amateurs.

The main reason why I won't even be trying it Alan. One of the guys at work brought his laptop in this morning with Chrome installed. Seems very fast, but that's just about the only thing we all came up with in it's favour. :thumbd:

that's a good point diss - lots of peeps will no doubt try it, but if it doesn't immediately appear to be as good as the browser that you are used to, and know well, then it's gonna fight a losing battle pretty much.

let's face it - the vast majority of peeps who use IE use it because it's there and they know no better and those peeps ain't gonna suddenly start using chrome - the peeps who do know better already use firefox or opera - if chrome isn't appreciably beter than either of them (and it certainly doesn't appear so), then peeps ain't gonna stick with it.

I suppose only time will tell, but from what I've seen, I can't see Chrome being much more than a 10 minute wonder tbh.

I think FF are updating the javacript version with firefox 3.1 the V8 used by Chrome is good but its still google and I wonder if it will go the same way as their web accelerator to name but just one failed idea. People do not need a multitude of browsers, only the more tech savvy even try these out, FF has all I need for now, but the Network prefetch next feature is something I turn off straight away.
