Title: sync
Post by: Baz on Sep 01, 2008, 18:44:55
what would be the main reason for a drop in sync speed and profile. Just a small drop today no disconnections reported in router logs

There has to have been a re-sync, Baz, even if it's not reported. Nothing else would explain the change. Of course, if you're lucky, as I was this morning, the speed goes up not down.

The major issue is to discover why your router disconnected, usually it's a burst of noise, in my case it was a bunch of BT engineers.

Run a copy of Routerstats and leave the machine on overnight, Baz, that will show the drop. The later Netgear firmwares did stop reporting loss of sync for some reason known only to the company. :(

They weren't asleep after I'd given them a burst of noise for messing up my connection. I think they put it back together especially well as a result. ;)

Loss of sync can be seemingly random. My line is often rock solid for 2 weeks or so, then I can have 8 re-syncs in a row before it settles down again. It's usually caused by a burst of noise, which can be anywhere along the line.

My line hasn't been much different to that either, sebby. It just seems like every 2 to 4 weeks someone decides to play about with the cable!

as I said it was only a small drop but is it worth re-booting the router or will it correct it self.

It'll only change again if it loses sync again. If you want to force a resync, the best time to reboot the router would be in the morning as there is less noise around then.

I discovered a new source of electrical noise last night, a very loud source that knocked my router off line and it wouldn't re-connect for a good 10 mins after I'd stopped ...... trying to clean the mud off the car from the camping field that we left last week using a power hose. The little Chinese motor in the power hose / pressure sprayer works very hard indeed (smells a bit hot if I use it for more than 5 mins at a time). It was one of those purchases that came about because I couldn't believe what good value it appeared to be. It does do it's job very effectivley but I suppose that longetivity will reveal the true value...

I have a paper shredder that smells 'hot' when I use it for more than a few minutes at a time.  I'm sure these cheapo manufacturers only expect their products to be used once, and thrown away.

On the subject of car washing, we've had an army of Poles start up several hand-car-wash businesses in our area, and while the language barrier makes conversation limited, I have to say, they do a bloody good job for a few quid, and I shall probably be visiting one tomorrow.  :)

Make sure you take your car Simon..  ;)

Seriously, we have a couple started up around here, not sure they are Poles, my mate took his car in to them, I had a look at his car just after his visit, I was well impressed, they had cleaned the wheel arches, wheel trims and the door shuts as well as the rest of the car of course, all for a fiver.
