IDNet Help / Uboss VoIP Service
Last post by Tacitus - Feb 02, 2025, 15:47:35
Has anyone any experience with the UBoss VoIP service?

Not sure of the exact date the PSTN service will be switched off round here, but end of 2025 appears likely.  In view of that I'm having to start considering options.

Virgin (NexFibre) have installed full fibre in the area but Virgin are the only supplier at present.  The fact they took three visits to install a working service at a neighbours is hardly encouraging.....  I expect Virgin to maintain a monopoly round here for as long as they can get away with it.

I can only tell you I've been online all evening (it's now 1.10am) with no outages. I agree the error suggests an issue with IDNet though.

IDNet Help / Connection termined due to a n...

I seem to have had a number of recent disconnections - including one that lasted an hour and half tonight - that were "Connection terminated due to a network provider issue" (see the image).  During the longer outage this evening I not only rebooted the modem and router but also tried a second router; nothing would connect.  The distinction between that and the "Your router terminated the connection" suggests an IDNet problem, but I see nothing on their service status page.  What am I missing?

IDNet Help / Re: IMAP log in slowed down
Last post by zappaDPJ - Jan 28, 2025, 18:58:59
No problems here using IMAP via an Apple email client.

Conversely I have had longstanding issues with Windows Outlook taking an age to connect using POP/SMTP :dunno:

IDNet Help / IMAP log in slowed down
Last post by peasblossom - Jan 28, 2025, 18:42:45
I'm not sure if this is a problem that is specific to the email client I use or to IDNet, but one of them has slowed down a bit logging into IMAP. It's not glacial, but it is definitely slower than it was. I have a trivial amount of emails in all inboxes, by the way. Thoughts?

I know this is an old post, but adding some info in case of use in the future...

---

I use an EdgeRouter-X at work to do the same with a different ISP on a VDSL connection.

I have a /29 IP block (8 IPs, 5 usable)
network address:   x.x.x.208
usable IPs:        x.x.x.209 through x.x.x.213
router address:    x.x.x.214
broadcast address: x.x.x.215

Eth0 MTU is 1508, pppoe MTU is 1500 (This change is for my G.fast connection, fibre requirements may vary)
Eth1/eth2/eth3/eth4 all in switch0 group

Routes:
Eth0 is set for PPPoE, x.x.x.214/32
Switch0 has been assigned IP x.x.x.208/29

Firewall rules:
WAN_IN allow traffic (new/established/related) to destinations x.x.x.209-x.x.x.213
WAN_LOCAL allow ICMP

DNS cache is available on switch0

Based on the replies here (thanks for that) and elsewhere, I don't understand the need for VPN when it comes to sharing output from Pro Tools, it just seems to be 'the done thing'. I now have a licence but can't get the iLok licensing manager to work

Anyway I do still want to be able to connect to a number of sites in the U.S. which are blocked here so I think I'll give NordVPN a shot.

Quote from: nowster on Jan 18, 2025, 00:05:28The only useful reason for using a VPN is to appear to be where you aren't.

In my case I have a VPN server at home so I can connect when I'm out and about to services I run behind the firewall. Similarly work does the same for their Work From Home employees.

VPNs don't actually bring any extra protection. Almost all interactions over the internet are now secured using encryption (eg. https) and effectively unsnoopable.

Quote from: robinc on Jan 19, 2025, 07:15:23Interestingly I have discovered that these houses were all built with a Sky outlet point in one room. That is as far from the road as you can get. Wondering if that would have been ducted or just hung under the floor....
From what I understand fibre does not take kindly to tight bend radius so it's a question of getting it to the desired destination, on the surface, without looking odd.

The anecdotal evidence is that the smallest practical radius for a bend in the fibre is round the circumference of something about the size of a 50p piece.
