IDNet Help / Re: Strange thoughput problems...
Last post by zappaDPJ - Nov 21, 2024, 17:58:35
I found the whole thing strange. It was as if data was being sent down the wire in chunks separated by a few seconds rather than just being overall slow.

Also hops 5 and 6 (or 4 and 5) of the second tracert makes no sense at all. I've never seen that happen before and I've run hundreds of similar tests in the past.

My extremely limited understanding of MTU suggests something within in the Internet is broken and lowering the MTU results in less time spent retransmitting corrupted packets :dunno:

It does make you wonder, given your MTU must have been at 1492 for some time, what's changed?

Since early this morning the majority of sites have been extremely slow to respond for me. I don't beleive it's due to an issue at my end and a speed test confirms I'm getting my expected throughput. tracert responses however have been inconsistently odd to say the least.

PS C:\Users\zappa> tracert www.idnetters.co.uk

Support suggested I change my MTU which was set at 1492 to 1460. That does so far seem to have fixed the issue.

Networking & Routers / Ethernet over Coax
Last post by robinc - Nov 15, 2024, 08:27:27
This may be daft - but - we're buying a house that has a TV coax point in every room. My guess is that somewhere in the loft there's going to be a hub of some sort - still waiting for info about that. Now I know you can do ethernet over coax and I do remember with great <insert feeling> the fun I had back in the early 90s working in a local secondary school complex with RM PCs and miles of coax for the network.

What I have in mind is using these to feed wireless access points as an alternative to our current Tenda mesh system.

Just wondering if anyone here has done anything along these lines?

Networking & Routers / Re: Public IP Addesses

I assume you are assigned an IPv4 address for the external interface which isn't in your routed range?

IPv6 is a different thing. Everyone on iDNet gets a /48 from which you can assign /64 networks.

Hi,

Anyone using a /29 or /30 range with IDNET. if so what router are you using.

I am trying to achieve the following

Use a Public IP on LAN using 'IP Routed Subnet' Interface | DrayTek

Thanks,

Helpfully will not be a problem as UBOSS is a monthly thing the problem is me finding the energy doing it with all else that's having to be dealt with at present.

As a passing thought, when you come to up sticks you could transfer your existing landline number to a VoIP provider which would then enable you to continue to receive (and even make) calls to/from that number on your mobile devices.  You would need to tie that into the move of your internet service as the terms of your existing contract may mean that porting out the landline number would cause a cancellation of the whole internet / phone package (and even possibly early termination charges).

Something else  with this driving up using mobiles the phone numbers don't work when you have to select called numbers options. They used to and tried with an old Panasonic which as current phone cleanly wasn't sending a number signal. Used to be no problem and isn't with the mobiles. Moral stay well clear of UBOSS when things settle with brothers death we will be off to mobiles or new provider.
