I've developed a strange problem on my main PC this morning, the keyboard refuses to work in Windows I'm getting the following error message in Device Manager "cannot load device driver it is either corrupt of missing error 39". I've tried unstalling and reinstalling software several times to no avail.
Keyboard is not faulty works fine before windows loads and also works on another PC any suggestions would be gratefully received, have also tried another keyboard on the PC and the same thing happens. ???

What keyboard is it? have you tried using a restore point from when it was working? Also have you installed any new software that may have corrupted the driver/registry
Delete the usb hubs then let windows rediscover them, and the devices that are plugged into them

Thanks for all the suggestions, unfortunately still not been successful in getting the Keyboard working, now doing a backup restore from my Homeserver from a couple of days ago. :fingers:

Most definitely, Rik. :) Seems to be restoring ok so far though.
I hate it when a device disappears like this, it's bad enough when it's an optical drive, but when it's the keyboard, it really does cramp your style. :(

It is annoying, Rik, I've had it happen with optical drives and a sound card that used to do it on a regular basis but I've never had a keyboard do it. You are rather stuffed with what you can do with a PC when the keyboard disappears though. :P

I don't know yet, Rik, it's only just over half way, looks to be about a 2 hour job, there's around 45Gb to be restored in total.

Well the WHS restore worked flawlessly :thumb: and I've now got a working Keyboard again. :yes:

I'll second that, Glenn much less hassle than the likes of Acronis Trueimage or Norton Ghost, especially now that they hve updated the recovery CD software. :thumb:

Maybe I'm a bit of a dinosaur, but I never connect a mouse or keyboard via USB, preferring PS/2 and only use motherboards that support this.
My current mouse and keyboard are both USB but I use USB-PS/2 adaptors on both and will continue to do so until I no longer have a choice.
I'm not anti USB, just slightly bemused that basic (yet essential) input/output devices can be completely knackered once the OS kicks in and the fault is down to device driver corruption within the OS.
It just doesn't make sense to me.

Unfortunately it also had the same effect on my PS2 port on this occasion, the keyboard wouldn't work on that either when I tried it, Drummer.

At least the restore was successful but it is somewhat worrying when a corrupt keyboard driver can render your machine virtually unuseable. Without any backup images or such you'd have to do a repair install of Windows and with XP and all its service packs and updates that is fraught with danger now.
True, Ray. There is still a fragility about the OS which should have been resolved a long time ago. :(

Yes, Rik, I'm also getting the feeling lately it is showing it's age as I seem to have been having more problems over the last few months. I keep getting this little voice saying that perhaps, perish the thought, I ought to give Vista a try now they've released the first service pack. :eek4:

Vista works just fine on my Dell D620 laptop, not tried it on anything else yet though.
And WHS restores it very nicely
