I would never trust the results of speedtest.net; I've always found them to be unreliable. The best indication is the BT speed test (http://www.speedtester.bt.com) (though it can be difficult to actually get a result). Alternatively, I always find the Namesco (http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/) one to be quite accurate. :)

thing is how do you know if ANY of these tests are good or not? Ive used the tests at Maidenhead and the one at Dublin been a tad closer to me and get roughly the same results, give or take a bit; then other days dublin will give 'better' results than maidenhead then vice versa so which is right  ???

If you want to see a good speed use the one that gives the best result ;)

and we all know BT one can be a bit temperamental :D

My view would be why bother to do a speed test unless you think you've got a problem?

I think speed tests can be reassuring sometimes, but as Rik says, unless you think something's wrong, I'd avoid speed tests. They can be highly addictive.  :P

Yes, I've found the Maidenhead speedtest.net site very unreliable for quite some time now - it gives much, much lower speeds than any other.  I've found that speedtest.bbmax.co.uk (which also uses Namesco) usually reflects the same results as the BT speedtest, so that's a good one to use if the BT one isn't cooperating.

Same here, Krysia. Maidenhead often has me travelling faster than my line can go.

Don't get me started on transport... ;)

Well Sebby, you can always get in your car!  >:D I often look out of my window and watch the M6 rushing past, or not! It is amazing how often the traffic is queuing.

You raise an interesting point, BB. I moan about public transport, but the roads aren't any better. I've had to drive for work for the past 3 weeks and it was far from pleasant. I'm quite looking forward to getting back to the Tube!

Ah, as a peasant who lives in the provincess (how I hate that word it is used by Londoner's to belittle the rest of us) I cannot find myself sympathetic to anyone living in  or around the capital!

Just to throw a spanner in the works

Just ran tests

Namesco  two test 9230 kbps and 8630kbps
Maidenead test 6300kbps and 6276kbps
Thinkbroadband 6200kbps and 5789kbps
BT 5998kbps

Not bad as profile is set at 6500kbps  input 7424 and output 448

Namesco has never done that before  ::)

It just goes to demonstrate why I feel that speed tests are best taken with a pinch of salt, Den.

Indeed, Rik. I really think you hit the nail on the head yesterday when you mentioned the need to do speed tests. Unfortunately, I think it's stemmed from poor ISPs that have lead to us not trusting them. I know that when I was with Pipex, and even Entanet (when speeds would decline in the evenings) I would forever be doing speed tests to see what the latest results were. I just don't feel the need to do that with IDNet, unless I think something is wrong.

Same here. I know what my line 'feels' like. I only test if it seems slow, or something is reported here.
