Hi All.

Pass. :( You need Simon, Lance or Mo (whom I know all use Vista). If you see Sam (mrapoc) he's another option - I'm sure there are others, and I apologise to them for not remembering.

The problem is, I can't see any shared folders from the XP machine that is on my Vista laptop or the other way around..

How do i go about sharing folders?

Also, is sharing printers as easy as it is on XP ?

I've really not had much time to mess around with it much.. So if you've got anymore help or tips, please throw them this way  :)

Paul.

How do i go about sharing folders?

The way I share folders is by right-clicking the folder, going to Properties, then Sharing, then click 'Share...', and follow the wizard. You can then access the share by going to the network path shown in the folder Properties->Sharing window.

I believe you also need to make sharing available via the Network and Sharing Centre.

Also, is sharing printers as easy as it is on XP ?

I'm just about to try this now... I'll let you know how it goes. ;)

Printer sharing looks to be fairly easy; I simply went into the Network and Sharing Centre and turned printer sharing on. It looks to be automatically sharing all connected printers.

Amended, for you. ;D

I was going to say what Adam just said, but would add that some firewalls require file and printer sharing to be enabled specifically, depending on which one you use.  :)

When i goto Network and Sharing Centre and allow printer sharing, i can't select it as it says no printers are installed, when i try to add a printer that is connected to my main pc, the connection to it fails..

I still can't see shared folders aswell.

I get to the sharing tab in properties.
click the share button
this gives the "choose people to share with" currently "paul - owner" is in there?
do i have to add another one? and what do i add?

Have you enabled File and Printer Sharing on both PCs, Paul?  Also, if you go to Printers on the machine it's installed on, you may have to right click the printer and enable Sharing, although not sure about that just at the moment.  Also, what Firewalls are you using on both machines?  You will probably have to enable something in both of them for the computers to see each other.

File and Printer sharing between XP and XP works fine as i can access the files downstairs and they can access mine and print aswell..

There are no firewalls running, just made sure.. I'm only using the router firewall.

All file sharing options is enabled on vista

And when i go to add the printer, i get this.

cant really see how you can connect to a printer that vista thinks isn't installed?
When you try to install the printer doesn't vista ask you where the printer is located i.e. local or network? and about installing software for it?
Could just be that your printer is not compatible with vista. It does seem to have issues with hardware and software which is why people revert back to XP

I notice that printer sharing is turned off. Have you tried to turn it on? See Here (http://windows.about.com/od/networking/ss/share_printer_2.htm)

Edit.
just reread posts, you've already tried that :)
I'm assuming you've added the vista machine to your workgroup?
also found this

"Vista has a function where you set the location of the network, e.g. Public or Private.
Obviously you've got Public set up. This disables File Sharing, and all other handy stuff.
Go to Network and Sharing Center. (If you can't find this, right-click on the connection next to the clock on the taskbar and click it)
Notice some things aren't displaying that green light and say they're off?

Click customize at the top under the internet globe thingy and change the location to private.
If the Sharing and Discovery features still say off click on them and click something like Turn on or activate you get it. "

might be worth a look.

Hi xild.

I've tried public/private already.
I can't enable printer sharing (as in pic above) as it wont let me until a printer is installed.. But i dont want to install a printer, i just want to share  :(

All workgroups are the same.
Printer sharing is the main prob.. as i print at work from my laptop aswell as at home.

I can understand why people don't like vista as i've only used it for 2 days now and already pee'd off with it

Paul, sorry to have to ask an obvious question, but the XP machine with the printer installed is turned on, right?  And the printer is also turned on?  Good.  Now, can you just double check, on the XP machine, that the printer has Sharing enabled, by going to Control Panel > Printers & Faxes.  Right click the printer, select Sharing and make sure that the printer is shared.  You should see a 'hand' icon underneath the printer icon if sharing is enabled.

Now, when you click Add Printer in Networks and Sharing Centre on the Vista machine, you should get a dialogue box saying it's searching for the printer.  When it finds it, I think you just click Install, and it should pull the drivers across from the XP machine and install the printer.  Your only problem might be, as Ted said, if it's an old printer, and it doesn't have Vista drivers.

Just a small thing. You still have to install the printer even if it isn't physically connected to "your" computer in order to share it.
If i remember correctly in XP to XP you could opt to use the driver on the host machine or install it on your machine. That wouldn't be possible with vista as its a different driver.

Printer is on, Computer is connected to is (i'm using it to post this message) Printer is shared, Double checked by using my laptop with XP on and can print.

When vista searches for the printer, it doesn't find it.. if i put the path in manually i get the connection denied box (as above in pic)

This pc has the latest drivers installed, there is also drivers for Vista aswell.. Under printer sharing options "additional drivers" it doesn't have Vista there.. only XP and below.. will that be a problem?

BTW, The printer is a HP Deskjet F380.

I'm at a bit of a loss I'm afraid, Paul.  :(  If it's any use, you can download Vista drivers for it from the HP website, but I don't know if it will help:

I'm left feeling the solution will be to install the drivers in Vista, then point the port to the network, assuming that's possible.

By the time we're ready to make the move, In, we'll probably be on the successor to Vista. :)

I've not done no changes. so dont know why its picking the printer up now but still not letting me connect.

Got it working.. FINALLY!!!

Start > Network > Add a printer > Add a local printer >
Create a new port: Local Port
Next
Enter a port name: \\computername\printername
Ok

Find your printer in the list and install it.
