Title: Argh! Internet down??? Real problems for the past 2 days.
Post by: Jimbo on Dec 21, 2007, 13:26:36
Hello.

I'm posting this from a very flaky internet connection.  For the past 2 days I've had real bother with the internet.  Webpages not loading and no response from ping requests to websites.  It's very intermitant, as I'll ping www.bbc.co.uk and get request timed out, but about 2 minutes later it will work... then it won't. :(

I've reset the router (BT 2700HGV) and this has not helped, I'm connected to the router and home network fine also.  The sync speed is around 2Mb, but I still can't use the internet.

I am connected directly to the master socket and have tried Opera, FF and IE on the 2 PC's within the Household. :(  I have left a message with Out of Office support at IDNet and I'm awaiting a callback.

Has anybody else had difficulty lately???  I miss the internet. :(

Many Thanks!

It's clearly a local problem, Jimbo. Are you getting a sync?

This sounds a bit like the problem I had a few years ago, when my service died over Xmas. It turned out to be an internal wiring fault, possibly triggered by the cold weather. Have you got another router you could try?

Awesome, just had a call back. :)  Swift service, love it.  Many Thanks.

The line is ok, looks like it may be my end, so I've got to check my MTU settings.  However, I think I may have found the culprit.  The digital handsets/phone in the house!!!!  The fella from IDNet said there was some noise on the line, now it got me thinking that the only thing "wireless" next to the router is the phone basestation.  I switched this off and voila!  The internet came straight back on!

So I've moved this around the corner from the Router (on the floor at the minute. lol) and it's still working.  So I think that's been the issue.  Stange how it's only happened the last 2 days mind, but hey, I'm happy once again. :D

Cheers, oh, Merry Christmas as well!!

Hi Rik,

See my new reply. :)  You're right, was at my end where the problem lay. :)

Thanks.

Glad it's sorted, Jimbo. DECT phones can play havoc with Sky boxes as well. :(

Have a good Christmas. :)

Well, eat lots of food, wear a silly hat... :)

I guess you mean DECTs? Some units put out a lot of RF harmonics, which 'beat' into ADSL frequencies and cause problems. Usually, it's enough to re-site them, in the worst cases though, they have to be replaced.

I meant sky boxes Rik, sorry for not pointing that out clearly. I am aware of the problem with frequency and wifi but you mentioned DECTs can have adverse effects on sky boxes

I did? Oh yes, (takes ADSL hat off), the frequency DECTs operate on can interfere with Channel4 and its related channels. Usually only a problem if the phone is right next to the box.

I think on wilders some people would wish the same ;) I always keep my wireless phone as far from all other electronic devices as possible makes sense really, I still remember as a kid the Taxi two way radio's interfering with the radio at home if they were close by :)

I read a tip elsewhere concerning crossed lines. If you think that changing to another pair might help your ADSL, then report a voice fault of intermittent crossed line, ie being able to hear other people's conversations. Apparently, the standard cure for that is to change pairs. Whether you get a better or worse pair is, of course, a lottery.

I remember putting some loudspeakers next to my old CRT TV once, powerful magnets, ended up with a lovely mauve/green screen, it self-cured in an hour or so after moving them away. ;D

I think I'll leave my line as it is Rik its working fine and the only voices I hear are the ones telling me to kill in my head, so its ok Rik

Odd, the only ones I hear are the ones that say, "You really should log off now", and then I realise Sue has come in and it's 2am again. :)

Regarding interference and vacuum cleaners.
40 odd years ago we moved into an upstairs flat of a house right on the main road.

One day I was in my usual position stretched out on the settee, helping my wife do the hoovering by keeping my feet up  ::), when all of a sudden a male voice echoed around the room emanating from the vacuum cleaner!!  My wife dropped it as if it was red-hot!

Turned out it was that new invention ......... Taxi Radio!!

Speaking of the 2wire...... I just upgraded a fixed line from 1mbit (far far away from exchange) to max dsl.

Attached are the stats - its been up for over 3 days without retraining and I can't actually believe it.

Good speed for that attenuation, I get about 3232 on 56db.  :'(

I'm absolutely amazed... I haven't seen such a long line hold that sort of speed before. 3mbit is about the highest. I'm going to test it with a netgear sometime soon to see what the difference is.

My Netgear would sync about 400k lower, with a wildly fluctuating noise margin (7db).
