Comments here please.
I've been testing for a few days - looks good to me. :)
Thanks for yet another new toy, Tim.
I have a few of these type of things already so can't see it being used a lot by me, great idea though for people that dont :) and another great initiative from IDNet ;D
It seems to hand hold quite nicely, Gary, and has the advantage of being under users' control more than something like PhotoBucket. I suspect that, for many customers, this is the app which will get them using their webspace.
It may well do, I have a thing about putting more stuff up now since I got my proper QDOS, its Q2917! I need to hide online more not post more of my stuff Rik ;D :o
Karma for Tim...Thanks to all concerned. ;)

I can be traced back a good decade, Gary, it's too late for me to hide.

Let us know when you've published, In. :)
Like email addresses, the biggest choice of names will be available to those who register early.
For those wanting to view the gallery, the url is:
http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php
I see a few of you are not hanging about. :)
Rik, can we have a basic explanation of what it's all about please? Perhaps there is one and I've missed it. :)
Hi Noreen
It's a piece of server-side software which makes it easy to upload, organise and share photos, using your webspace. It's similar to, say, PhotoBucket, but the space is under your control and 'ownership'. It is possible to upload photos by FTP and share them with appropriate image tags - I've been doing this over on the Hobbies board, the new facility just makes it easier to do the job - and make the images available to anyone with an internet connection.
Mine went completely wrong said I had mis matched passwords, tried to re-enter then said I had a gallery :'( contacted IDNet as it just does not work *wail*
I had a look but couldn't really understand it either. It seems to be that we share our photos with other IDNet users so it's not very personal. I tried to delete my account as I didn't want to take up space that someone else could use but I don't know if that worked.
You share with anyone who has a 'net connection, Ann, you just have to give them the URL, in my case http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/Rik/
I'm not sure whether you can delete the account, I haven't tried, but IDNet will delete it for you if you ask.

I agree Ann, I too wasn't aware that it was a " public " site, so like you, I have deleted my account.
BTW .. Yours has gone.
I would have welcomed a private gallery. ;)
Just so I'm clear on this, what you're not happy with is the fact that there's a central 'page' where all the albums are on view?
Any photos you upload can be password protected and are then only visible to anyone you give the password to. Or have I missed the point?

(1) Correct.
(2) Yes I realise that Rik.
I can only speak for myself of course. ;)
Another brilliant piece from IDNET. Well worth getting to grips with and is straightforward to use after going round the options and setup.
I only have 2 photos up at the moment but will probably increase them when I find some I like.
Have a quick look http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/cavillas/
You can hide personal photos though and as rik said go to edit on your album, at the bottom add a password then no one can see your pictures without that password
I have just loaded 1 photo, I would like a option to upload more than 8 at a time though

I just grabbed a handful, Alf, when I set mine up. I like the way the software sizes the pics, but allows the full size image to be selected. I'm not sure I like the Exif information being shown, it gives away too many secrets. ;) (It can be removed in an image editing program if you wanted to hide it.)

Yes, I don't really like the side menu with everyone's name on it. So when I give the URL of my gallery to my friends, they are invited to see everyone else's. My photos aren't private and anyone could stumble on them but this is a bit too open for me.

You can change your name as well for annonimity and with a password no one can view any of you pictures if you set it that way Ann, I'll password protect mine in a bit then only hand out the password to friends, no one can see you pictures or name at all then untill they have logged in

Just to add my two penneth to the original discussion, I think it's a great addition to the services available to IDNet customers, but it doesn't actually offer me anything I don't already have set up by other means, so I doubt that I would use it right now, but it's nice to know it's there. :)
I think the key is that it's there for all the customers who would like to share their photos with friends and family, Simon, but who aren't familiar with services like PhotoBucket. It also has the advantage of being IDNet-hosted, so it's fast. :)

And also aren't familiar with the new Photo Gallery either, Rik. I still haven't a clue how to use it. :(
Have you set it up, Noreen, via your accounts page (navigation options on the left)?
No I haven't, Rik, because I don't really understand it. I'll have a look in the morning. :)
Once you've set it up, Noreen, there's some guidelines on using the software before you login to it. Essentially, uploading a file is easy - just select it in a file manager window (or several files). They go to a default album, but you can create others and move them to it, select what you show or don't etc.
Have a look then feel free to ask questions. :)

I don't know whether you've noticed, In, but the edit album option on the left edits the "front page" album which you see in the gallery. If you edit via the drop-down option, you edit that sub-album only.

Yes thanks Rik, I found that eventually.. :-[ :-[
Me too - I couldn't work out why my edits weren't taking...
Just set mine up but won't bother posting any pics at the moment as everything seems to get posted in the main IDNet album page and all the permission settings may as well be written in Swahili. I don't want to password protect my pictures but by the same token I don't want them advertised on IDNet's gallery page. I just want to share pictures with people I know by giving them the URL. Any idea what I need to do to set this in the permissions settings? There is group permissions and user permission with about 20 options, none of which seem to have anything to do with not advertising my pictures on the IDNet gallery page, any ideas?
Afaik, Phil, that's the way it works, but I'll check.

OK, thanks Rik. Pretty much useless for me then. I'll just stick to ftping pictures to my webspace then.
According to the gallery set up page in my account I should be able to hide the photo's although it doesn't really say how. It says:
By default all photos are visible to everyone. To protect your privacy you can either password protect your photos or hide them so people wishing to view your photos need to know the link to the album.
The latter might work by setting up a sub-album, Phil.
How to hide an album:
Edit Album
Scroll down to "Hide Album"
Tick the hidden checkbox
Save
Thanks to Martin for the solution. :)
That hides the album to everyone though even ones that go directly to my albums url.
OK, I'll go back and ask again... :)

Hi Phil
Once you give someone your private URL, they can see the album on the front page of the gallery. However, other people cannot. I've just verified this with Martin, who's hidden his album. If I login via my own page, I can't see it. If I login directly to his album, then go to the front page, I can. You'll always see your own album, a bit like you can see your email address in the forum, when others can't.

Just followed your instructions. I was thinking the URL was http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/username when infact it was http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/username/album_name
My stupidity was the problem Rik. Thanks as always for the help. Have some more karma :)
Thanks, Phil. I don't think it's stupidity, we are all trying to find out how the thing works, we just need a more detailed manual. :)
Just a suggestion as the system is still in Beta. It would be good if you could hide all your albums from been on the IDNet gallery page but point your friends to http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/username so they can see all your albums in one place and browse all of them. This doesn't seem to be possible at the moment as you have to point them to each individual album like http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/username/album_name
AFAIK, Phil, that's a limitation of the software, but I'll ask IDNet if it can be done. Nothing will change, though, until the new year - unless Martin gets bored. ;)
The software is officially out of beta now, btw.

Fair enough. It should still be very useful.
Hi Phil
I've had a response from Martin:
This is the case, the system is hierarchical so you can hide everything or just one album. I have hidden everything and http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/martin works despite it being hidden. The instructions on the https://www.idnet.net/secure/account/webspace/gallery.jsp page if followed exactly will do what is being suggested providing individual albums haven't been hidden previously.
If you hide individual albums then giving someone your http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/username address it will not show anything as the individual albums have been hidden. (to rectify the situation unhide the albums and then follow the instructions on https://www.idnet.net/secure/account/webspace/gallery.jsp
Thanks Rik. I tried hiding everything and it didn't work for me, so this is what I have done:
Created an album (hidden) that contains nothing but sub albums (un-hidden). Now when I log out and go to http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/username/hidden_album it takes me to the hidden album and when I click on the un-hidden sub albums they are visible.
Hope that makes sense, I suspect I might be going round the houses doing this but it seems to work and as far as I can see even though the sub-albums are un-hidden they don't seem to be visible on the IDNet gallery page.
Hi Phil
I think you and Martin are saying the same thing, but differently, if you know what I mean. :)

My pleasure. :)
Just noticed my album had become visible on the IDNet gallery page. I logged in checked my album still had hidden checked, which it did so I clicked save and the album disappeared again from the IDNet gallery page. Must be a slight glitch somewhere?
Sounds like it, Phil. Let me know if it happens again and I'll raise it with IDNet (or drop them an email yourself). I can now get in to my gallery space again, so maybe something odd happened?
Does anyone know if the traffic from viewing our galleries counts towards our bandwidth usage? In a way it seems right that it should, but equally we have little control over how much viewing takes place.
Afaik, the upload doesn't count in the normal way, and only our own viewing counts to the download total.
Super. Thanks Rik - again!
It's an interesting point as to who funds the hits on the albums, Colin, I'm guessing it's IDNet and the people who browse. Let's hope they don't find it's more expensive than they bargained for. :)

Once you account is activated (but before you are actually migrated), you will be able to set up email, web space, blog space and the gallery. I think, however, that you won't be able to upload to the web space etc until you have migrated, but the email will work immediately.
Thank you guys.
I really like the gallery, and even though I only get migrated tomorrow I already have some pics on the site.
http://gallery.idnet.com/main.php/v/bob_s/
THe options for the gallery allow some customizable options to change the look of things and even setup albums as hidden or password protected.
I havnt tried many of the settings, but I think I will use them.
I love the amount of server space which an be configured between the web service and the photos
I have set mine to a massive 1.5GB for photos and .5 for web. A nice feature to allow potentially 2GB of photos online, and secure.
Just another hint that may be of use, If you use firefox to look after the photos and the login, why not also use internet explorer to check it all works, as it doesnt have the password saved it will see the files as a general user. I found it useful anyway.
