Post by: cavillas on Oct 21, 2007, 14:41:11
In case anyone has not heard of it just thought I would mention http://www.kitz.co.uk

A really helpful and useful site for adsl connection and other things related.

It's a site I often point people at, Alf, rather than re-invent the wheel. :)

It says I'm a loooong way from the exchange, 5.15Km. No wonder I can't get any better than 2mb.

You must have a fairly 'straight line' cable run to get that, Glenn. I'm only 3.6k from the exchange, but my attenuation is 56db, suggesting a few detours along the way. (Or just lousy cable and poor joints. :()

Glucosamine just doesn't work with phone lines - you can't get the cable to swallow the tablet! :)

Ageism rears its head again, creakily. ;D

I'm only 249 metres from the exchange, and live in the middle of no-where (so low contention).  I guess that explains my fast speed test results. :)

Can you post your stats, downstream attenuation, sync speed and noise margin. I'd have hoped you'd be getting a bit more out of the line at that distance.

I'm pretty pleased with the speed I'm getting.  My previous ISP struggled to achieve 3Mb/s for most of the day!

Connection Speed: 8128 kbps down, 448 kbps up
Line Attenuation: 4 db down, 1 db up
Noise Margin: 10 db down, 28 db up

You should be able to get faster than that, try a BT speedtest, I'm wondering if your profile hasn't caught up yet.

What speed would you be expecting for him, Rik? It's looks pretty good to me.

Actually, you're right Noreen, thanks for the sanity check.  :) Profile should be 7150, throughput around 6900. For some reason, best known to myself, I was looking at the speed and thinking 'sync speed'. It's been a long day.

Well I know what ADSL is, and the speed in MB's :-[
but thats my lot, but it's very interesting nevertheless. 8)

But please dont worry, igrorance is bliss for me, if you put too many dials on my dashboard I wont see the road. ;D

OK, anytime you have a question, though, feel free to ask - we all had to learn about this stuff when we started out. :)
