Dated yesterday................
Pipex Communications plc, a major provider of telecommunications and internet solutions including broadband, voice, web hosting and network services, today announces that further to its announcement on 13 July, it has completed the sale of its consumer Broadband and Voice division to Tiscali UK Limited for a total consideration of £210 million, on a debt-free basis, before adjustments.
Freedom2Surf is now part of Tiscali, and therefore freedom2surf and it's customers have no further connection with PIPEX Communications plc from this day forward.
A bad day for a lot of unsuspecting customers, Noreen. :(
Found out that Orange use Tiscali to install their LLU's, that's double trouble in my book >:D

I'm feeling very smug though, probably several of IDNet's new members are too. ;D
Rightly so, Noreen. :)
5 days to go... ;)
And today is Battle of Britain day.

You won't regret it, best thing I have done in years and i'm not blowing IDNets trumpet for the sake of it.
When I was with Orange they put me onto Adsl max and i had a 4.5mb line that would not stay stable after 6pm in fact it kept cutting out every 5 mins or so, in the end I ended up with a line almost as slow as my typing, Orange said they would do a line test....that never happened they said they would do one again after 48 hours, I called back and they said case closed as it had been over 24 hours since I had called! Then they said they could not do a line test as I was not using a live box (untrue) also I was once told it was bad as I was on dial up >:D I was turning very grey by this time, I had to call BT out and they were shocked and had no idea why my line was so unstable, I recouped the £120 call out fee after 6 months fighting and had my line put back to a fixed 2mb line. Now with IDnet my emails arrive (freeserve/Orange/wanadoo emails are blacklisted by many ISP's) , my line has a profile of 4000 and all was pretty much stable from start in my ten day training period. It really is such a massive breath of fresh air Simon you made a great choice. Above all no call centres and helpful advice, god that's a blessing.
Well, I have to admit, I am looking forward to the migration, and if it's as good as people here say it is, then I will be more than happy. I would have been even happier if there was some webspace included. ;)

I know that this has been thought about before, and most likely will be again in the future.
Yes, if we keep mentioning it, it might not get forgotten about. ;)
It won't. ;)
What won't?
It! >:D

To be honest as long as "it" does not distract from a good service "it" will be acceptable ;D what alway worries me is the more an ISP diversifies with tempting morsels for customers the more it seems to head downhill as it spreads itself thinner than Victoria Beckham on a sun lounger, then you end up with voip, webspace all frills more spills, if I wanted webspace I would go get a domain, I guess for me I prefer an ISP to offer internet connection with reliability and not much else, then I'll shop for add ons elsewhere. After a few nightmares with other ISP's I worry about the all you can eat offers. ::)
I agree with Killhippie entirely. I am really looking forward to my migration from....PIPEX/TISCALI and I would hate for my new home to start down the same route, eventually selling out to the above. Web space is kind of useful, although I have only ever used it to host photos. If we have static IP addresses does that mean we could point things such as Forum avatars/signatures to our own computers?
I think that if IDNet were to introduce webspace, it would be done so with the same high quality provision of service as the rest of the services they provide.
It could be that the reason they haven't introduced it yet is for the very reason above of not wanting to bring it in and then finding that they haven't got the ability (whether that be hardware, expertise etc) to do so.
Because we have static IP's it is quite possible to have a server for hosting avatars. It wouldn't be a good idea to host anything on a machine which isn't on 24/7 as, obviously, if you turn the machine off the outside world loses the ability to see your avatar etc.

I'm sure they will Lance, its just an inherent fear after past experiences, and also with current market trends to try and offer every home service possible, I look forward to the constant QOS shown by IDNet. ;)
I believe that IDNet are very aware that their customer base is with them (a) because they deliver high quality service and support and (b) as long as they continue to do it. I can't see them taking any risks to damage the relationship which we have with them.
If they do introduce webspace, I am sure it would be provided with the same high service levels that we are used to (but I suspect that support will be limited to problems, not guidance on how to use it, eg HTML code). Earlier this year, we saw the bandwidth allowance for Home Lite increased from 2GB to 5GB at no extra cost to users. Clearly, the company felt that this would be both attractive to customers and sustainable for them. I am sure any additional facilities would be judged in the same way.
I agree IDNet do seem to be very aware of their user base unlike many other companies Rik, Oh and Morning ;D, I guess I come from the school of separates, like HiFi systems, you get the best buying separates components and building up what you want rather than the all in one systems, and my attitude to the Internet is the same, so many companies have gone into supplying tv, phone, mobile, Voip, webspace, toast in the morning, well maybe not the toast :D that they cannot cope with the sudden increase in customer support for all these add ons, and then if one part fails you lose the lot in one go, at least if your amp dies you can replace it without replacing the whole system, so I think ISP's should do what they do best provide good quality broadband with no frills. I am sure IDNet won't over stretch themselves, their service is spot on and that is the whole point, great hassle free Internet, but I do believe in never putting all your eggs in one basket so to speak.
It's why I have email hosted at 1&1, Gary. Though when they had problems at the beginning of the year, the IDNet servers took over for me. :) Some redundancy in email is essential to me.

I can understand that Rik, its the best way to go, Solely relying on one provider for anything is bad news, look at the fiasco with talk talk and Orange who were overwhelmed and did not connect people for months, and Virgin, if you lose your net you lose your tv if you subscribe to the all in one packages ok you have freeview but you would be pretty dissapointed. The industry said it would be bad news to do these very things like free broadband etc and it has proven to be correct, which has been great for companies like IDNet by showing that doing things the right way with relative simplicity just works.
Simple is good. Though whether that applies to me, others will have to judge. ;D

Shall we have a vote? ;D you are far from that in my book Rik, but my book does have big letters for reading ;)
;D
I have large letters because I like to study the shapes. :)
Same here *cough* my favourite is the Q ::)
I judge alphabets on the lower case a, e, i, s, t and the ampersand. Though Js can influence me too. :)
I swapped over from Nilly a few months back.
I wouldn't want to be a Tiscali customer if they paid me.
Have a karma for making your first post on the forum!
Thankyou! :)
More about Tiscali's takeover. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/10/30/tiscali_pipex_redundancies/
Why am I not surprised. :( I feel sorry for the staff and customers.
I'm not surprised either. It's the usual story, with more customers and the same number of (after the redundancies) support staff. Oh well, the customers may see the light one day!
Oh, the joys of being free!! (http://pc-pals.com/pics/smileys/yeaaay!.gif)
Now you know you were right to move, Simon. ;D
Abso-bloody-lutely!! (http://pc-pals.com/pics/smileys/grin.gif)
Our Cs and Support are in England, what can be better than that and no scripts.
Rarely having to phone them anyway?? ;D

Never phoned them once in nearly 12 months, never had the need. ;)
I phoned them up today to sort something out (direct debit) and the phone was answered in four rings. As Simon was on the other line, the person who I spoke said he would get him to phone back. Sure enough, 5 mins later Simon rang back.
Now how often do CS for any company actually phone back if they say they will. Not many I can tell you!
It was good actually speaking to Simon for the first time too!
He's a very nice man, so's Tim. :)
And so's Miriam. ::)
Er, not quite Alf. ;)

It is a good policy IMO when selecting services to make a point of asking where the support and call centres are. Not only is it a good way of deciding who to go with, but it may also help it to sink in to companies that prospective customers can be attracted that way.
Did it with car insurance and a Leeds accent told me "oh yes chuck, we're in Leeds and Manchester".

I agree with you, Jupiter, I do let companies know that I'll only deal with them if they use UK call centres, and I left Lloyds TSB when they decided to go to India. If enough of us make our feelings known, maybe they will take note. Now about the manufacturing industry...
Freedom2Surf customers are now discovering that when their routers reboot they get Tiscali DNS servers, there having been no announcement of this change. Most believed that no changes would be made to f2s until well into 2008.
I noticed that Nildram were busy trying to assert their independence, Noreen. I suspect they've seen migration rise since the deal was done. It will be interesting to see if people begin to find their lines mysteriously moving away from BT...
It sad to see that F2S, which was once a great ISP, has fallen so badly. They were my first BB supplier :)

Me too. When I first joined them (before Pipex) they were great, I was amazed a few hours after my new BB connection went live, to receive a phone call from f2s Support to check that everything was OK and that I was happy with it. Those days are long gone however I'm happy to have now found IDNet. :)
