Title: Router log help

Hi all,

I have recently bought a new router Netgear N300 after experiencing problem with my old one. My line is currently going through a 10 day retrain and I have for the first time started to look at my router logs and was hoping someone could explain what the following means.

I have seen this everyday since I have used the new router and have no idea what it is all about, I have noticed that the wi-fi light on my router flickers when this is happening. I have also seen some dos attacks in the log, is this something that i should be worried about and if so how can i fix it? Appreciate any help.

Do you have any devices attached to the router that use the 0.7 address?

Though don't worry about the DOS reports, that's just the firewall doing its job.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick replies. I have nothing attached to the router except my PC and to be honest I don't actually need the wireless at the moment. Good to know the dos attacks are not cause for concern :)

I'll be honest I don't even know what UPnP is for or what it does :blush: So I am guessing that I don't need it?

Hi,

I do play the odd online game all on my PC but not like I used to in my younger days. I take it this is more for the likes of xbox or playstation?

I don't know, I never play games. ;) UPnP allows software to open the ports it needs on the router. Turn it off and if anything complains, you'll know you need it. :)

I've drastically cut your post, Jup, as you left your IP address in the entries. They look like standard firewall reports to me, the only one which puzzles me is the Internet connected message, which might suggest your line lost sync briefly.

Hi Rik,

Thanks for the edit ;) Yeah the router resynced after I turned the UPnP off. The wireless light on the router seems to be flickering like a mad thing so I have just switched that off also as I don't need wireless at present. I'll leave things as they are if it all seems normal. Will update tomorrow. Again thanks for the help.

do you have any wireless equipment that might be using it.for example I have a printer that has an address in the router and also some times my sons PS3, although that is now cabled in the address for it when using wireless is still there

Hi Baz,

No wireless kit anywhere. Since I turned UPnP off I have not seen the original message in the logs. I do see Firewall: packet drop message every 20 secs since I turned UPnP off but it does not seem to affect the connection. I'll keep an eye on things.
