Title: Post upgrade problems
Post by: Rik on Sep 05, 2010, 19:43:50
If you're having any problems with your service following today's router upgrades, eg you can't reach a particular site or sites, could you please post details (including the URL and the results of pinging it)  in this thread so that we can pass the information onto IDNet.

If the problem goes away, a post to say so would also be appreciated.

Thanks. :)

Hi there.

We cannot get through to some web sites as 'server errors', and email access is intermittent. Also, my wife has sky sports app on her ipod touch, and this cannot now find any internet. It appears we can't access secure servers or ports, or at least not for any period of time. Thanks . Here's one server we cannot access  vi.ebaydesc.co.uk

Have been having a few problems since yesterday evening.  Occasional disconnects (last one at aprox 10am). Since then, I have been getting frequent "Ooops.. Firefox could not find the page you are looking for..." messages (or something along those lines). A refresh or two does the trick, but it is way frustrating!  Have also been experiencing something similar to blocked ports - i.e. intermittently unable to connect to my mail servers.
I wasn't even aware of any "Upgrades" taking place - don't we get e-mail notifications of planned works? If not, then we should! ;)

The last webpage I had to "refresh" 3 times before it would load was: http://www.theitjobboard.co.uk/IT-Job/Junior-Java-Web-Developer-Consultant-London-Java-J2EE/7955682/en/?WT.mc_id=A117&xc=63&utm_source=Aggregator&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Trovit

Hi Rik, I'm having problems accessing some sites but strangely it's only on my desktop, my laptop (connected via wi-fi) appears fine! I had assumed I'd got infected somehow but hopefully it's an after effect of these upgrades.

http://en-gb.facebook.com seems to be one, as does http://www.play.com and http://www.crackberry.com

pings return - Ping request could not find host
tracert returns - Unable to resolve target system name.

EDIT: Just realised my laptop is using a VPN connection so I can access my work's intranet, that'll explain why it seems okay.

For me this isn't a problem with any specific URL, more a general problem where I receive a "server not found" error about one third of the time visiting any site at all.

As an example of a consistent problem however I'd cite any live stream, such as this one http://www.justin.tv/competitiveonline  which fails to work at all for me (or indeed any other live stream, not just the ones on that particular website)

Same.  Not a specific site issue, just intermittent failures.

Just to clarify, that's incoming mail being received twice by me.

Hi Steven,

No problems here with play.com or crackberry.  Have you tried a DNS flush?

Are the current problems possibly area related, my connection went down this morning and my router completely locked out this afternoon due to the idnet updates. However now my connection is flying along and no problems with ebay, Play, Facebook etc.

I'm Birmingham based 0121.

DNS flush did not work for me, nor router or PC reboot. Only thing that does is refreshing pages, as many as 4-5 times.
Also having problems in sending emails.

Everything was okay until late afternoon.

I just tried calling IDnet cust svc (01462480092) and got the "we are closed" message.  Didn't leave a voicemail (but I might do soon).  Does anyone know what the official word is on the situation? Is there a number we can call to get an update?  I know the answer will probably just be "Major Service Outage in the BT network", but I'd like to know whether engineers are at least on the case.

Oh, I'm on the Rayleigh exchange if that helps at all.

It's clearly evident that there are still routing issues and IDNet will be working on them until they are resolved. Although it's very frustrating I don't think there is anything anyone can do except wait. :(

So is it an IDnet DNS server issue?  Can anyone confirm that?

Yay!

It appears to have settled down nicely.  NOW don't touch anything!

Still a bit of a mess here.

Same as lot of other people -  Intermittent email and  problems with ebay (etc).  Bit of a pain really becuase Sunday night is my ebay maintenance  time  and it's not been possible to do it this evening.  :rant2:

Hope it all sorted out soon, generally service has been pretty good  over the last few years.  :thumb:

been getting disconnections all day during this problem.. watched my internet 'light' as it went out just now, then went red.. then green.. then net was back.. been dropping out like this all day.. i really wish it was JUST a dns issu, but this upgrade has now re-awakened an old problem.

And i've bought 2 routers, had bt out, and recabled my entire interior wiring twice.. to cure.

I've never had internet as bad as this in all the years.

What old problem? Can you explain? its just an issue with IDNet that will get sorted what ever you had BT out for is not part of this problem, all was fine untill the works started, talk to IDNet in the morning if you still have problems, I'm sure things will smooth out tomorrow and be back to its old self hopefully, its not permanent.  :)

The planned maintenance was advised in advance , notices were on the IDNet site and here on the forum and as stated in the notices there would be some downtime for users. Equipment needs replacing updating at some point and it is inevitable that upgardes will affect connections at some point.

If you use the RSS feed for status reports you would get advanced warning to your email inbox.

I re-synced at 242 kbps this morning.  :shake:

Is this likely to be part of the weekends problems or just my usual ongoing poor line issue?

I'm talking to an ex BT linesman right now and he seems to think that sort of speed should trigger an automatic investigation... I bet he's wrong.

I run a separate DNS on the server. The biggest issue is external access to my IP has been up and down all the time, mostly down. Perhaps this is routing changes propagating across the UK, I don't know.

I'm not aware of it being able to email, it's RSS or the Network status page only afaik. Unless, of course, you use a client which emails RSS.

Except maybe this oddity that Gary and I have about not updating the DNS servers... seems what I was doing (putting in blank entries) should have forced a reload from IDNet.

Could be an odd caching issue somewhere though, I'll see how it goes.

It shouldn't be, Ben, partly because I'm on Max and partly because we're all the same when we reach IDNet, it's just the speeds in between that differ.

Put original activation address and password in.

As I use Outlook 2003 and the RSS feed although shown does not work you have to have the 2007/2010 version for it to work. But after Googling I found RSS Popper a Freeware addin for Outlook and Outlook Express and it works perfectly.

What I actually did I remember was to right click on the Idnet Customer Feed icon in Firefox then select properties and copy the feed location and paste into the link field in Popper and it automatically filled in the other two fields. Sorry if I confused you, but I had tried so many different ways myself even including IE8, I  even confused myself.

Well I'm not sure what's going on now. It seems that along with the IDNet upgrades at the weekend, the new router was installed on my line as well, so I am utterly unsure as to where my problem is.

Periodically, it appears to an external user that services (SSH, HTTP, etc) are not available, the connection times out. This is usually for about 15 minutes until it is back again. Sometimes people on other ISPs can access these services while others cannot, and then it may swap around. A connection that is already active may hold (like SSH), but then when it is 'down' new connections cannot be made until it is 'up' again.

Firewall logging is on and shows that the connection is registered from the remote user even when it appears to be down for them. Packet logging shows that the TCP SYN is passed (from remote to server) and then ACK'd by the server. The server is then sending 'previous segment lost' to the external client (indicating it's not getting anything more), and this whole SYN/ACK/LOST party goes on and on until the connection is back 'up' to the client.

The last DNS error I recorded was 4am or so.

Anyone have a clue if this is my router or an upgrade problem? Worst router upgrade timing choice ever!

Not really a problem, more an observation, but something slightly odd seems to have happened with the upgrade.

My BQM trace from last Friday:

(http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share-thumb/17f337225b0f6bd12f4fba4843411034-03-09-2010.png) (http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping/share/17f337225b0f6bd12f4fba4843411034-03-09-2010.html)

Today:

That increased ping (yellow) usually means more congestion, could the new kit be picking less than ideal routing?
Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: Rik on Sep 07, 2010, 11:26:45
Possible, Bill. Let support have the images so they can take a look at it. (Fwiw, my pings are slightly lower.)
Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: Bill on Sep 07, 2010, 11:33:48
I'll leave it for a day or so in case it settles down (may not be related to the upgrade), but will do.

It's not actually causing me any grief, and I'd guess support might still have other things on their mind :eek4:

Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: esh on Sep 07, 2010, 14:17:36
Down from about 13-14 ms.

Also my problems are solved; during the upgrades the server picked up the new default gateway but thanks to Linux's super-friendly logical intuitiveness.. didn't remove the old one. Two default gateways make things get very confused, unsurprisingly. Quite why it was swapping between one and the other, who knows! Fixed now anyway.

Thanks for your patience, everyone.

A bit late coming back to this, was out a lot yesterday and this morning.
Although I can browse most sites as normal there are a couple that seem to be consistently slow. My pings are not normal though, they were consistent between 30>35 but am seeing a lot of spikes at the moment. Have attached a TBB graph, have also had RouterStats on some of the time and the pings are showing up fairly erratic on there as well.
Not too keen on messing about much on this machine at the moment as it on it's last legs and VERY temperamental now. Should get my new machine soon  :fingers: then I can stop living on a knife edge  ;D

tracert www.idnet.net normally gave 6 hops, I now get 7.

It was initially blamed on a resolver, due to events over the weekend, but on examining the logs, it's an external routing issue, apparently. Blame rolling 24 hour news trying to keep people in the loop.

My connection has been up and down this afternoon. Yesterday morning my connection went down and support said that it sounded like I had a "stale session" but got me fixed in about 15 minutes or so. But I've had three outages in the last hour or so. Is this part of a post upgrade problem too?

(I'm subscribed to IDNet's support RSS and don't see anything on the Support status pages, not sure if I should sit tight or contact Support).

If you mean it lost sync, then that's a local issue. If you had sync but couldn't reach the web, it could be BT or iDNet.

Nope, just read the updates on the main page/your comments. I kept connection all the way, but got the little "internet disconnected icon" so I was connected to the exchange, then nothing else.
So it seems the servers were stuck in the usual "updating" then reset and said "update failed, retrying". I've had that happen in windows a couple of times.  :rant2:

There really shouldn't be any hangover from Sunday, Ben, but stranger things have happened.

Not convinced about that... I still think that new kit is sending some of us on the pretty route :(

Just thought I'd post to say everything has been fine since last night for me. I totally forgot to mention it!

Strangely, as of 2 minutes ago it has become lightning fast to load webpages, not that it was slow today at all either!

Where to? :dunno:

I'm going mainly on the BQM traces, they're horrible compared to before the upgrade. I wish I'd done a reverse traceroute from tbb on Saturday, that might have been interesting.

But like I said earlier, it's not causing me any serious grief in comparison to what others are getting (just a bit of speed loss on some sites) so I'll leave it for a while.

Only some of the forums on tbb, but there's nothing IDNet can do about that :P

Seriously, none constantly, but every now and then a site will go slow for a few minutes, then back to normal. Never slow for long enough to investigate anything >:(

Had a more-or-less complete loss of connectivity about 10:30 for ~5 minutes, someone on tbb with the same complaint.

Nothing on the status page, is the routing problem still with us?

IDNet are tweaking their network to prevent the possibility of router overload as happened yesterday. The work will cause shorts bursts of apparent DNS issues, but will be completed by lunchtime.

Hmmm, why do I know that name?

Anyway, I have had one or two issues with RSS feeds not being contactable but they have all come back at some point today so that might be an indication things have returned to normal.

There was a problem with our new router this morning. The vendor is investigating.

I can just imagine the size of the router needed for all of IDNet. How do you reach up to the buttons?  :D

What's people's speeds like since the changeover? I'm down about half a megabit on average speedtests but I don't know if that's within standard fluctuation levels really; I very rarely turn off the network stuff. (Yes, I did change the router around the same time but *not* the ADSL modem).
Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: Bill on Sep 11, 2010, 23:53:03
Can't say I've seen any difference here. I've got some anomalies when using the tbb tester, but they were there before the upgrade as well ???
Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: esh on Sep 12, 2010, 00:18:54
TBB tester is crazy. I get under 5 Mbit on that. Speedtest.net shows me at 6.2 Mbit which is hardly terrible, it just used to be more that was all.

Edit: speedtest.net history shows I am down 0.8 Mbit actually
Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: Bill on Sep 12, 2010, 00:41:36
Speedtest.net will give you artificially high readings because of the way it processes the figures before giving you the answer, personally I don't trust it.

The best way to check a speedtester is to find a decent sized file somewhere and time how long it takes to download it. That's basically what the tbb tester does, I suspect that it's actually the more accurate one- it always was for me when I was on ADSLx.

(Off topic... I think my tbb oddities may be concerned with routing (peering?) on fast connections, they had something similar with Virgin cable connections a while ago. It either agrees with the BT speedtester (at about 35Mbps) or is about 6Mbps slower, with no obvious rhyme or reason. And as the BT figures agree with what I get from downloads elsewhere (eg iTunes), they're the ones I believe!)
Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: esh on Sep 12, 2010, 01:12:52
TBB is definitely wrong. 4.9Mbits is something like 630KB/s and I know I get over 700KB/s, it's just I used to get over 800KB/s. The BT speedtester agrees with speedtest.net anyway.
Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: Rik on Sep 12, 2010, 10:39:19
Which just goes to demonstrate the variations we all see. FWIW, with a slow speed line, most speedtesters seem to agree for me.
Title: Re: Post upgrade problems
Post by: esh on Sep 12, 2010, 11:33:37
I don't speedtest very often because I'm so happy with things, I just get paranoid when things change :)

It's likely within fluctuation levels and I just don't realise it... I'm not a massive downloader in reality. I upload more quite often!
