Title: Confused about ADSL2 - friend got it despite his exchange not 21CN enabled.
Post by: Aaron on Jan 06, 2010, 01:43:32
A friend of mine says his connection got upgraded to ADSL2 today for free by his Albion ISP (blog here (http://noc.albion.co.uk/?p=284)), no action was done on his part to get this upgrade, however I'm confused as his exchange does not have 21CN WBC (http://samknows.com/broadband/exchange/SDPTRSF). He has already confirmed it by pasting his DSL type from his router to me: DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A. He also had some increased speed from 2mbps to 4mbps as a result (he lives quite far away).

I thought we cannot go on to the ADSL2 packages unless our exchanges has 21CN WBC support. I'm feeling somewhat cheated here as I'm paying expensively for the old ADSL Max packages with no extra bandwidth capacity that the ADSL2 packages offers.

Can someone explain what's going on? He's able to get ADSL2 without a 21CN enabled exchange and as far as I know Albion isn't an LLU, just an ordinary BT ISP like IDNet. My exchange is http://samknows.com/broadband/exchange/NDHRO

Are you sure he is with Albion? O2/Be are at your exchange and they do LLU adsl 2+ the router DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A. is a feature of that router, mine can do that but it does not mean I have adsl2+ it means his router can do annex A, its possible he is maybe pulling your leg here or is now with O2/Be as you cannot get adsl2+ without WBC being enabled on a BT line, unless its been brought forward but I would see that as unlikely as its only early only in the new year.

Looking at the Albion blog are those router settings not the same as O2 LLU - Encapsulation: PPPoE, Multiplexing Method: LLC, VPI: 0, VCI: 101, DSL Mode: Auto ? So its a tie in within an LLU provider,is it not somewhat similar to a product you can get from AAISP.

The VPI & VCI are not for a BT product, unless they change for ADSL2+

So what is the answer? He's just pulling my leg and is still on ADSL Max?

That's not BT ADSL2+ (WBC). Either they've switched to another carrier, eg C&W, or the blog is wildly wrong.

Since the exchange has Be/O2, I bet its them they are using
