Title: What is going on this morning?
Post by: cs on Jul 02, 2009, 10:38:10
Anyone else having problems this morning?

Connection is terrible this morning:

(http://www.speedtest.net/result/508425573.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)

My connection is usually rock solid as I only live about 500 yards from the exchange. I don't believe my exchange is congested.
I have rebooted the router a few times to no avail.

Router stats:
ADSL Link                 Downstream          Upstream
Connection Speed    8128 kbps    448 kbps
Line Attenuation      24 db    7.5 db
Noise Margin            10 db       27 db

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks
Chris

Chris, I think you best ring support they can test the lne and see if anything has caused a problem, but first do a BT speedtest so you can give them the results.

Al ok here as well.

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6515 kbps

And this is via Wi-Fi from my laptop using old fashioned 802.11g

Ok thanks guys, must be something local.

Running a BT speedtest now, things appear to have picked up a little bit right now, but nowhere near where they should be.

Cheers
Chris

Have you plugged into the master socket if you have an NTE5 to do the test, to eliminate all your own wiring? That is if you have an NTE5 master socket, see faq and you will see a pic of one.

Well the router is plugged directly into the master socket and I have an ADSL Nation faceplate and there is nothing else on the line.....

Put a support call into IDNet and emailed them the details, I'll let you know what they come back with.

Its always worth eliminating things like the faceplate, they can go wrong, normally you would be asked if you have tried that, but lets see what they say, good luck  :thumb:

Let us know what IDNet say, Chris. There's nothing obviously wrong from the information you've provided.

Well, my connection picked up about mid afternoon, and seems to be back to normal now. So I guess it was BT messing about with something.

Unless IDNet did something their end? I emailed the details to support but they have not replied.

Wait and see what they say. More than likely, they haven't made any changes at this point, so it was probably a BT thing.

I'm also having problems with very slow speeds, it's been like this for over a week now. I never bothered asking or looking into because I was away last week and thought that it would just work it's self out but it seems to be the same.  I've never really had any problems with IDNet since I have been with them and I'm hoping this is going to be sorted out soon. I've tried changing the router and resetting it with no luck.

I've done the BT speedtest:

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 487 kbps

That's a dire throughput for your profile.  It could be exchange congestion (you can check here (http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/)), but the best thing would probably be to have a word with IDNet and get them to run some tests on your line.  Do you know when your exchange is due for WBC?

I would speak to support   On this one. If you can, run a few more speedtests preferably at different times of day.

It certainly sounds like exchange congestion. Is it always that bad?

Thanks for the replies guys :)

I'm not a hugely technical type when it comes to the internet, I've only learnt what I know from reading on this site.

I checked the capacity at that's fine: There are currently no known capacity problems on your exchange.

I never knew what WBC was until I looked that up either. That should be enabled now, on that site it says: BT have announced a ready for service date for this exchange. The estimated go live date is between 16th March 2009 and 31st March 2009. So I'm guessing it's enabled?

I reset my router again, early this morning as I read on here it's better to do it when less people are on. I ran the BT speedtest again with better results this time and noticeably different surfing speed as well :)

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 6719 kbps

I'll do a few more speedtests throughout today and see how it changes. I've never had and speed issues at any time of the day in the past. Maybe it's just Wimbledon.

That's certainly a big improvement on yesterday.

It will be interesting to see what happens today whilst the men's final is on.  I suspect that as it's the weekend things won't be so bad as most people will be watching it on TV at home rather than via the internet at work.

Hi again guys,

I'm still have major speed issues to the point where browsing the net has become painful :(

I havev just ran another BT speedtest after a router reboot,

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 337 kbps

And I have some router stats

Data rate
8128     448

Noise margin
8.8     22.0

Output power
19.8     11.9

Attenuation
22.5     15.0

Is there anything obvious from the router stats as to what the problem is? Nothing has changed recently in my set-up and up until a few weeks ago I was a very happy customer. I've just sent another email to support with the info above, saying that router reboots are not helping. I'll wait and see what they say this time.

Is there anything specific I should be asking them?

Would going on the the ADSL2+ service make it any better, If I fill in the upgrade section it's telling me I could expect speeds of up to 13mb.

It might help, but there's only one way to find out, unfortunately. My personal theory is that BT are letting VPs become congested at WBC-enabled exchanges, but that might be totally wrong. However, it's the only logical thought I have been able to extract from the pattern we've seen. Do talk to support though.

I emailed support again yesterday but I have heard nothing back today.

How long does it normally take for them to get back in touch? Should I ring them instead?

I'd ring, though they are closed now. Last night's central failure has affected response times.
