Title: How to block internet sites
Post by: Monola on Jun 15, 2009, 20:01:15
Hi everybody,
Can anybody, please, advise how to block certain internet sites on a home computer? I am thinking about Facebook,YouTube etc. The download in our household is going through the roof at the moment but nobody claims any responsibility! Not sure what I need to do in order to stop the children going onto the sites. Any ( easy to follow  :))suggestions/instructions will be much appreciated.

Or use OpenDNS and block the sites before they ever reach you. ;D

If you buy a 2700HGV router with Firmware version 5.29.117.6 for a few pounds on Ebay, you can use the BT Access Controls and Parental Filtering.

The easiest way is to enroll at OpenDNS as Cavillas recommends

The best way is to block them at the router, then password protect access to the router. Children are resourceful and will soon bypass browser restrictions.

Netgear routers are extremely easy to set up to block sites or keywords.

I believe the best way is by deploying OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com) on your network. Once you're using OpenDNS, you can create an account and you have many options to control your connection, such as blocking sites.

Another option is to use your router, but it depends if you router can block sites. Netgears can, for example.

I had exactly the same problem 5 years ago. I'd return home only to find a never ending list of web sites listed in my URL bar, web sites i'd never heard of, and i was dangerously close to my ISPs download limit. My ISP had the facility for it's customers to track web activity by the hour and i soon realised the large download periods were happening while i was at work. I had caught the culprit red handed.

But how do you explain to an 88 year old great-grandmother that downloading very large porn movies, burning them to disc and then sharing them among her kintter's circle......isn't the done thing?
